Abstract: A method and device for reducing an input image by modifying the palette used in image compression. The reduction process involves mapping one or more colors of the original palette to a single color in a new palette. The image size of the reduced image is estimated from the entropy of the input image and that of the modified palette. A scaling factor, which can be computed from the image statistics inherent to the input image, is also used for adjusting the estimated image size of the reduced image.

Abstract: A method is disclosed for receiving a downlink radio link control (RLC) data block with a mobile station, as is a mobile station and a computer program that operate in accordance with the method. The method includes receiving the RLC data block; determining if a final block indicator (FBI) bit is set and, if it is, determining if a Relative Reserved Block Period (RRBP) field is valid, and, if it is not, discarding the received data block. For the case where the mobile station is in an EGPRS TBF mode of operation, and if a retransmitted RLC data block is split into two parts, and if in a first part of the retransmitted RLC data block the FBI is set, and in a second retransmitted part of the RLC data block there is a valid RRBP field, then these data blocks are retained.

Abstract: A method and device are disclosed for reporting capability of a mobile device, in order to improve experiences of the user of the mobile device. This capability reporting is accomplished by a web service that makes available a device profile from a device profile repository located within the mobile device. The web service utilizes reverse hypertext transfer protocol (HTTP) binding for simple object access protocol (SOAP). Enhanced content is subsequently received at the mobile device, such as content in an improved format, and the enhanced content is based at least partly upon the capability of the mobile device disclosed by the web service. If a characteristic of the mobile device changes, thereby causing a modification of the capability of the mobile device for accepting a type of enhanced content, an update signal is sent to the device profile. The device profile is a user agent profile or variation thereof.
Abstract: Apparatus, and an associated method, for facilitating selection of antenna pattern characteristics to be exhibited by an antenna assembly of a communication station, such as a base transceiver station operable in a cellular communication system. Indications of channel conditions on an uplink channel are utilized in the determination of antenna weighting values by which to weight antenna weighting elements of the antenna assembly. In one implementation, an uplink channel correlation matrix is reformulated into vector form to reduce the computational complexity of calculations required to select the antenna weighting values. In another implementation, a discrete Fourier transform operation is performed using fast Fourier transform techniques to select the antenna weighting values.
Abstract: An apparatus and method for displaying a plurality of icons on the display of a mobile terminal are provided. Messages are first sorted by comparing characteristics of the messages with first context category values. The messages may be assigned to discrete groups. The messages within each of the groups are then sorted by comparing characteristics of the messages with second context category values. Icons are assigned to the messages and displayed on a display of the mobile terminal.

Abstract: A web browser is configured to categorise book marked web pages. The browser runs a process that provides markers (CM1, 2, 3), which generate marker signals corresponding to individual categories for the content of the web pages. A user interface (21) is operable to allow the user to collocate a selection of the plurality of marker signals with network address data for the web page to be book marked, and also to allow the user to retrieve book marked web pages on the basis of the marker signals collocated to them.
Abstract: A resource controller may store a plurality of files or other data that are at least partially accessible by one or more users in a network. The user may operate a mobile device, such as a cellular telephone and/or personal digital assistant, to call or otherwise contact the resource controller. The mobile device and/or a communications network may send identification information to the resource controller that identifies the mobile device and distinguishes it from other mobile devices. Based on the identification information, the resource controller may grant or deny access to files. The resource controller may further provide the user with the appropriate user ID and/or password based on the identification information. The user may then enter the user ID and/or password to gain access to files stored at the resource controller.
Abstract: Apparatus, and an associated method, having a packet zone list timer embodied at a mobile node operable in a packet radio communication system. The packet zone list timer provides hysteresis to reduce the possibility of a ping-pong effect when a mobile node is operated at, or crosses, a packet zone boundary. A timer value used by the packet zone timer is selected at the mobile node without the need for network-generated commands to notify the mobile node of the timer value. Comparisons are made at the mobile node, and determinations are made at the mobile node as to whether registration of the mobile node is required.
Abstract: A method and system for processing information data in a wireless communications system for reducing the complexity in spatial multiplexing of signals over different transmit antennas. In orthogonalized spatial multiplexing with the resolution of one, encoded data are interleaved and converted into a plurality of parallel sub-streams. Each sub-stream is then spreaded with a user specific spreading code with an intentional delay offset of few chips prior to modulating the encoded data for transmission. Likewise, in orthogonalized spatial multiplexing with the resolution of two, encoded data are interleaved and converted into a plurality of parallel sub-stream pairs. Each sub-stream pair is spreaded pairwise with a user specific spreading code with an intentional delay offset of few chips.
Abstract: A method is disclosed for operating a device having a numeric keypad to provide intelligent text input for Indian scripts, such as Hindi. In this method predetermined number keys, such as 2 and 3, are reserved for vowels. These keys produce either independent vowels or dependent vowels (matras) depending on the character preceding the text buffer insertion point. If the character preceding the insertion point is a consonant, keys 2 and 3 produce dependent vowels, in all other cases these keys produce independent vowels. If the user wishes to change the dependent vowel into an independent vowel, the user can do this by pressing a context switch key, such as *, and the dependent vowel in sequence. As a result, the vowel is inserted as an independent vowel, thereby overriding the context into which the vowel is being entered. Other number keys, in the preferred embodiment 4,5,6,7,8 and 9, are reserved for consonants. If the user presses any of these keys, a consonant is inserted into the display.
