  • Patent number: 6667963
Abstract: A cellular radio network based positioning system for determining the position of a mobile station (16). For each base transceiver station (1 to 5) or cell of the network, a fixed list of base transceiver stations is stored by a Mobile Positioning Centre (13). Each list identifies those base transceiver stations which enable the position of a mobile station served by the corresponding base transceiver station (6) to be optimally determined. The list is transmitted to the mobile station (16) via the serving base transceiver station (6) together with a list of respective real time differences which exist between the serving base transceiver stations and the listed base transceiver stations. The mobile station determines an observed time difference for each of the listed base transceiver stations, relative to the serving base transceiver station (6), from signals broadcast by the listed base transceiver stations.

  • Patent number: 6662004
Abstract: A portable radio communication device having low power radio frequency unit, and having associated therewith a plurality of memory packs, the memory packs being situated remote from and external of the portable radio communication device, and the memory packs having a low power radio frequency unit associated respectively therewith, the portable radio communication device including data transfer means whereby the portable radio communication device is operable to read from and write to selectable ones of the memory packs, the data transfer means providing for the read/write data operations by low power radio frequency transfer between the low power radio frequency unit of the memory packs and the low power radio frequency unit of the portable radio communication device. One advantage of this invention is that bulky memory is not situated in the mobile phone handset itself, which is thus more compact.

  • Patent number: 6658064
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for transmitting background noise information including a silence descriptor identifier and background noise parameters in a communication system in which the information to be transmitted is formed into data frames. The data frames are subjected to channel coding to form channel-coded frames. The channel-coded frames are interleaved to be transmitted in two or more data transmission frames, and information of two channel-coded frames is transmitted in each data transmission frame. A first silence descriptor frame is formed provided with the silence descriptor identifier. The first silence descriptor frame is subjected to channel coding to form a channel-coded silence descriptor frame. The channel-coded silence descriptor frame is transmitted in two or more data transmission frames, and at least one data transmission frame transmitting part of the channel-coded silence descriptor frame is also used to transmit at least the background noise parameters.

  • Patent number: 6658249
Abstract: A method and an arrangement for setting data transfer parameters in a data transfer system is disclosed for use preferably in a digital cellular system. A data transfer connection may be established by setting first the parameters related to speech connection and then, during the speech connection, the data transfer parameters can be changed, when necessary to be suitable for data transfer. Then, at call setup, no data is needed on whether the data transfer connection is possibly to be used for data transfer.

  • Patent number: 6628927
Abstract: A method and apparatus for receiving a radio frequency signal and a method and apparatus for transmitting a modulation signal in a multiple channel radio system. The method for receiving the radio frequency signal involves mixing the radio frequency signal with a demodulating signal, tunable in frequency steps greater than the channel spacing of the multiple channel radio system to facilitate rapid frequency adjustments. The resultant intermediate signal is then mixed with another demodulating signal, tunable in relatively smaller frequency steps in order to select the channel containing the radio frequency signal.
