    Abstract: A method and equipment for providing frequency synchronization in a telecommunications system, wherein time stamps providing timing information are transferred over a packet-switched network from a transmitter network element to a receiver network element having a receiver oscillator. The expected times for reception of time stamps are estimated (i), deviations from the estimated expected time for the time stamps are calculated (ii) and at least one time stamp deviating most from the estimated expected time is removed (iii). The steps (i)-(iii) are repeated until a pre-determined number of time stamps is removed. Frequency of the receiver oscillator is then estimated using the remaining time stamps and the frequency generation of the receiver oscillator is adjusted based on the estimated frequency.

The total data rate at the network interface is greater than the data rate at the radio interface. According to the invention, the total data rates of the network interface and the radio interface are rate-adapted by transferring fill data in transmission frames in addition to payload between the base station and the interworking function, such that the average data rate of the payload at the network interface corresponds to the total data rate at the radio interface, and the combined total data rate of the fill data and the payload corresponds to the total data rate at the network interface.

    Abstract: Known digital QAM modulators use sine/cosine memories and a plurality of multipliers. This can be avoided by replacing the circuitry which carries out the circular rotation of [I(n), Q(n)]T performed in all the QAM modulators, with a CORDIC algorithm. The invented QAM modulator is comprised of a plurality of digital rotation stages (72, 73 . . . 74) coupled in sequence. The first stage (72) receives the IIN and QIN data streams and the last stage (74) outputs a vector comprising of the orthogonal I and Q components of a digital intermediate frequency signal. Each of the rotation stages rotates an input vector applied to the stage at a predetermined elementary rotation angle, said input vector being the output vector of the previous digital rotation stage. The modulator further includes an angle computation block (710) for counting the elementary rotation angles for the rotation stages.

A method is therefore provided for automatically correcting the frequency at the receiver to restore the received radio signal to approximately the first frequency using a multistage frequency correction algorithm. The radio signal comprises a training sequence that is known to the receiver and data symbols that are not known to the receiver. In the first stage of the frequency correction, the frequency offset is coarsely estimated based on the training sequence only, and the data symbols are frequency corrected by back-rotating the received data symbols and the training sequence by the frequency offset estimate.
