  • Patent number: 5804805
Abstract: An optical indicia reader for reading information encoded in optical indicia is disclosed. In one embodiment of the invention, the optical indicia reader comprises a light source positioned within the indicia reader to illuminate an imaging area containing optical indicia, an oscillatory system for scanning a light beam over the optical indicia, and a controller for controlling the oscillatory system. The controller is capable of directing the oscillatory system to position the light beam in a fixed relationship to an aiming axis of the reader. The oscillatory system may be fixed in position when the optical indicia reader is in a proximity sensing mode.

  • Patent number: 5763867
Abstract: In a preferred data capture system, a RF data terminal is capable of use alone or with any of a series of scanner modules incorporating diverse scanner technologies such as CCD bar code scanning, area image data reading, cyclically swept laser beam bar code scanning, and RF identification label scanning. In each case, a frontal operating panel of the RF terminal--scanner system is held facing the user during scanning, whether the system is held with the right or left hand. Scanner data is supplied to the-RF unit by mating connectors or the like. From the RF unit, the scanner data may be transmitted on-line to a host computer or other receiving station. The family of scanner modules may provide respective laser scanners with respective different wavelengths of illumination so that an optimum module may be selected for reading respective bar codes of differing color characteristics. The family is readily upgraded to incorporate new light sources of greater efficiency and/or more advantageous spectrum.

  • Patent number: 5640001
Abstract: A hand-held bar code reader includes one or more photosensor arrays which provide a plurality of image sensor portions arranged for receiving images of a bar code through a plurality of selectively usable paths of 5 different focal lengths which are defined by a passive optical system. A distance measuring system controls the sensor portion which is used to control the focal length. In one embodiment, the bar code image is projected to a plurality of receiving mirror surfaces, thence to a plurality of additional mirror surfaces and thence through lens barrels to mirrors which project the 10 images to photosensor arrays. In another, the bar code image is projected to a plurality of receiving mirror surfaces, thence to an additional mirror surface, and thence through a single lens barrel to a mirror which projects the images to a photosensor array.
