Abstract: In the processing of sulfur-containing metallurgical intermediates, sulfide ores or ore concentrates at a flame temperature of at least 1500.degree. C. in which sulfur dioxide and a melt are formed, acid sludge from the acid treatment of petroleum and mineral oils is substituted for at least a portion of the fuel. The acid sludge contains at most 85% by weight of inorganic components and is preferably introduced through a lance together with the combustion-sustaining gas and any additional fuel, usually in the form of oil.

Abstract: A cladding process and apparatus in which steel strip or sheet is cladded with a metal of lower melting point, e.g. lead, by maintaining a bank of constant level of the molten cladding material between a belt and the strip or sheet substrate which passes along an inclined path and is cooled to harden the molten material thereon. During the cooling process the applied material is compressed against the substrate.
Abstract: An anode for a cell for electrolytic recovery of nonferrous metals especially copper is provided with a plate-shaped deposition surface, a hanger for suspending the anode in the cell, and a perforated pipe along a bottom edge of the anode for discharging bubbles of gas upwardly in the electrolyte along the faces of the anode. A bar along an edge of the anode can be provided with a feeder for the gas communicating with the pipe and the hanger may have a passage communicating with this feeder.

Abstract: A furnace for the refining of nonferrous metal such as copper comprising a drum structure rotatable about a substantially horizontal axis and formed along the same side of the shell with a tapping box for discharging the molten metal and a slag-discharging weir, the interior of the furnace being subdivided into two chambers communicating respectively with the weir and with the tapping box. The partition is formed with a port interconnecting the molten metal baths in the chambers below the levels thereof to form a siphon.
Abstract: A furnace for the melting and refining of raw copper and/or blister copper comprises a shaft furnace having a lock-chamber feeder for the material at the top of the shaft furnace and an opening into a hearth furnace in which the copper is refined. The shaft furnace and the hearth furnace are constructed unitarily with one another with the shaft furnace surmounting the hearth furnace in such manner that, when the apparatus has been charged, a pile of copper is formed which is supported on the bottom of the hearth furnace and slopes toward a portion of the length of the hearth furnace.

Abstract: A method of independently adjusting the fuel mixture composition and heating rate for a multiburner shaft furnace for the melting of metal, particularly copper and its alloys, fed in lump form to the shaft furnace, in which the burners are supplied with air and fuel gas and the heating rate is adjusted by controlling the pressure of one of the components of the fuel mixture (air or gas) in the manifold for supplying this component to a group of burners. The other fuel mixture component has its pressure controlled in its manifold by a single controller constituted by a pressure ratio controller.

Abstract: A process for the prevention of supersaturation of electrolytes from nonferrous metal refining (preferably copper refining) with arsenic, antimony and bismuth in which the electrolyte solution is brought into contact with a chemisorption agent on a flat substrate. The substrate with the chemisorption agent is brought into a compact form with neighboring substrates and is enclosed in a protective housing before being contacted with the electrolyte.
Abstract: A method of forming an active surface on a solid, e.g. for use of the solid as an adsorbent, catalyst carrier or contact or reactant catalyst, comprising adding a mixture of binders to a solution or suspension of an activatable substance (reactant), the binder mixture containing water-insoluble synthetic-resin substances which can be swelled by water only to a limited extent.
