Abstract: A system and method for coincidence detection of ungrounded or inadequately grounded parts during the electrostatic coating process in order to improve production flow, provide an overall cost saving by efficient use of the coating material and prevention of accidental fires and false shutdown during production. The present invention utilizes a coincidence detection technique which performs a test for radio-frequency electromagnetic energy radiated by sparking and/or corona discharge caused by ungrounded parts outside a electrostatic coating area and a test for sensing and discriminating spurious radio-frequency electromagnetic energy radiated by sparking and/or corona discharge caused by any other external source. In accordance with one specific embodiment, the test performed outside the booth may include a further test for detecting ultraviolet energy radiated by the sparking and/or corona discharge.

Abstract: A rotary atomizer having a low capacitance, cup-shaped, atomizing head mounted for rotation about an axis of rotation has a coating material flow surface forming a forward cavity. A rotary drive means coupled to the atomizing head rotates the atomizing head about the axis of rotation. High voltage electrostatic energy is conducted through the rotary drive means directly into the atomizing head whereby charged coating material flows outwardly across the flow surface.
Abstract: This invention relates to coating systems and to methods and apparatus for coating containers and closures employing container and closure indexing machines having vacuum chucks mounted on the edge of one or more turrets rotating in horizontal or vertical planes about a stationary shaft for loading, spray coating, optionally curing and unloading can and can ends secured to vacuum chucks extending radially from the edges of the turret. Further, devices are provided for loading and unloading cans and can lids onto and off of a turret rotating in either the horizontal or vertical plane.
