Patent number: 6446713Abstract: A heat exchanger manifold comprising tank and header members secured together, each of the tank and header members having an interior surface facing the interior of the manifold. The header member comprises at least one raised surface feature on its interior surface so as to define longitudinal channels in the interior surface of the header member, and longitudinal passages within the manifold. One or more openings extend through the header plate and the raised surface feature. The width of at least one of the openings through the surface feature is less than the remainder of the opening, so that a portion of the surface feature defines a tube stop that limits the extent to which a tube received in the opening can extend into the interior of the manifold.Type: GrantFiled: February 21, 2002Date of Patent: September 10, 2002Assignee: Norsk Hydro, A.S.Inventor: Jeffery Insalaco

Patent number: 6434824Abstract: A process for making a fluid-tight connection between a tube and a plate-shaped member. The process entails inserting one end of a tube into a correspondingly-sized hole in a plate-shaped member so that the tube end contacts the plate-shaped member and extends beyond a surface of the plate-shaped member. A mandrel is then inserted and pressed into the tube end while heating the mandrel to a temperature sufficient to soften and deform the tube end and increase contact between the tube end and the plate-shaped member, such that the tube is secured to the plate-shaped member and a fluid-tight seal is formed therebetween.Type: GrantFiled: November 22, 2000Date of Patent: August 20, 2002Assignee: Norsk Hydro A.S.Inventors: Mauro Pascolini, Bjorn Vestergaard, Edward James Morley

Patent number: 6317966Abstract: A method and tool for installing a baffle in a tubular member, such as a heat exchanger manifold. The method and tool are adapted to use a baffle having a closed base that acts to obstruct the flow of a fluid within the tubular member, and further having a sidewall extending axially from the perimeter of the base so as to form a recess in the baffle. The tool is generally composed of a sleeve having an elastically and radially deformable end, such as a number of cantilevered members adapted to be elastically bent radially outward. Radially outward deformation of the sleeve enables the sleeve to securely grip the baffle, maintain the orientation of the baffle during its insertion into the tubular member, and then plastically deform the sidewalls of the baffle in order to secure the baffle to the wall of the tubular member.Type: GrantFiled: April 28, 1998Date of Patent: November 20, 2001Assignee: Norsk Hydro, A.S.Inventors: Jeffrey Lee Insalaco, William Marv Johnson, David Michael Halbig

Patent number: 6289980Abstract: A heat exchanger baffle and method by which the internal passage of a heat exchanger member is divided into two separate flow regions. The baffle includes first and second members having planar portions that define edges of the first and second members. The planar portions are connected to each other so as to form a connection region between the first and second members. The connection region is deformable to enable the planar portions to be folded onto each other. The baffle can then be installed in a heat exchanger member by installing the planar portions together into a slot in the wall of the heat exchanger member. After installation, the planar members remain substantially parallel to each other, and the connection region preferably contacts a portion of the wall opposite the slot. The manner in which the baffle is folded serves to bias the first and second members against the slot, so that the baffle is more reliably retained within the slot prior to being permanently secured by such methods as brazing.Type: GrantFiled: December 16, 1999Date of Patent: September 18, 2001Assignee: Norsk Hydro, A.S.Inventors: Jeffrey Lee Insalaco, Cowley Wendell Phillips, Jr.

Patent number: 6154960Abstract: A method for enhancing the brazeability of a heat exchanger manifold block (110) by promoting the braze metal flow in and around the manifold block (110) during brazing within a braze furnace. The invention is particularly directed to enhancing a brazement between a manifold block (110) and a jumper tube (124) that fluidically connects the block (110) to another component of the heat exchanger system. The method entails increasing the rate of convective and radiative heat transfer to the block (110) during brazing within a braze furnace by providing fins (116, 128), grooves (118, 130) or similar features on one or more surfaces of the block (110) that increase the surface area of the block (110), and consequently increase the heating rate of the block (110) to something closer to that of the tube (124). In effect, the surface features increase the heat transfer rate of the block (110) to compensate for the disparate thermal masses of the block (110) and tube (124).Type: GrantFiled: May 4, 1999Date of Patent: December 5, 2000Assignee: Norsk Hydro a.s.Inventors: Antonio Baldantoni, William Cagle

The second (26) of the two baffles also has a peripheral portion (30) contacting the wall (12) of the heat exchanger member (12) so as to form a fluid-tight seal therebetween. A second peripheral portion (30) of the second baffle (26) contacts the second peripheral portion (24) of the first baffle (18) so that the baffles (18, 26) are joined together as an assembly.Type: GrantFiled: February 18, 2000Date of Patent: September 19, 2000Assignee: Norsk Hydro A.S.Inventors: Jeffrey Lee Insalaco, Cowley Wendell Phillips, Jr.

Patent number: 6042801Abstract: The present invention concerns a method for baking or calcination of shaped carbon bodies in a furnace and a packing material for use in the same. In accordance with the method, carbon bodies are burned in a furnace chamber, supported or surrounded by a packing material which is formed from a mixture of a material containing carbon and particles of a material containing silicon oxide such as crushed chamotte stone. In accordance with the method, the baking of the carbon bodies will take place at a greater temperature gradient across the packing joint than previously, which results in greater tar combustion and better utilisation of the energy in the degasified components. Furthermore, a packing material is described that contains a component containing carbon and that also contains particles containing silicon oxide in a homogeneous mixture with the component containing carbon.Type: GrantFiled: December 13, 1996Date of Patent: March 28, 2000Assignee: Norsk Hydro A.S.Inventors: Hogne Linga, Arne Werge-Olsen, Lene Navestad Solli

Patent number: 6012449Abstract: An outer wall element for buildings wherein, between the inner wall shell and a solar-radiation permeable outer wall shell, a solar-radiation permeable and heat-insulating layer is arranged, the latter being separated from an inner heat-insulating layer of the inner wall shell by an interface that absorbs the solar radiation from the outer heat-insulating layer. At least the inner wall shell is provided with marginal lining elements, which can be parts of a frame, panels or the like, extending at least up to the interface and conveying heat to the inner wall side. In order to protect the lining elements from the high temperatures reached in the outer heat-insulating layer because of the use of solar energy, the outer heat-insulating layer and the lining elements are separated from each other by insulating elements with poor heat conductivity, which starting from the lining elements cover the inner heat-insulating layer along a marginal strip in the interface.Type: GrantFiled: July 8, 1997Date of Patent: January 11, 2000Assignee: Norsk Hydro A.S.Inventor: Harald Schulz
