Patent number: 8291044Abstract: A method of brokering a network resource. The method includes providing a service broker processor and a service broker registry. Upon receiving a request at the service broker processor to register a network resource to provide a network service, the service broker processor authenticates the request and authorizes registration in the service broker registry. A network client is updated with the availability of the registered network resource so that on receiving a third party request for the network service, the network client requests allocation of the registered network resource. A bearer path is set up between the third party and the network resource to provide the requested network service.Type: GrantFiled: October 13, 2004Date of Patent: October 16, 2012Assignee: Nortel Networks LimitedInventor: John Storrie

Publication number: 20120225686Abstract: A push to talk message protocol operating on a communication network between an originating and terminating communication device operates to transmit compressed message formats to initiate the push to talk message protocol. Four compressed session protocol message formats are used in the preferred embodiment. A compressed originating session initiation invite message is transmitted from the originating mobile station. A compressed terminating session initiation invite message is received by the terminating mobile station. A compressed session initiation protocol ping message is transmitted from the originating mobile station and received by the terminating mobile station. A compressed 200 OK session initiation protocol message is transmitted from the terminating mobile station and received by the originating mobile station. Finally, the originating mobile decompresses the 200 OK session initiation protocol message. These compressed messages are used to initiate the push to talk communication session.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 11, 2012Publication date: September 6, 2012Applicant: Nortel Networks LimitedInventors: Haseeb Akhtar, Anthony Jones

Publication number: 20120227101Abstract: The present invention supports a method for transmitting information packets across network firewalls. A trusted entity is provisioned with an address designation for a pinhole through the firewall during setup of a communication session between two communication devices. This pinhole address is used throughout the communication session between the two communication devices to transmit information packets onto and out of the communication network. Information packets addressed to the communication device inside the firewall are received by the trusted entity, which replaces address header information in the information packet with the address for the pinhole. The information packet is routed to the pinhole where it passes onto the network for routing to the communication device inside the firewall. Information packets transmitted from the network are also routed to the trusted entity for routing toward the communication device outside the firewall.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 11, 2012Publication date: September 6, 2012Applicant: Nortel Networks LimitedInventor: Wei Yuan

Publication number: 20120208533Abstract: The present invention provides a system and method to selectively negotiate different delivery styles for different types of packets sent from the Mobile Node to the Foreign Agent, which will allow the Mobile Node to negotiate a delivery style that will permit the Foreign Agent to transmit certain selected outbound traffic directly without reverse tunneling that traffic back to the home network. Specifically, the present invention allows the Foreign Agent to distinguish between certain types of BC/MC packets that are designated to be processed and routed to their destinations by the Foreign Network directly, as opposed to reverse tunneling the outbound traffic from the Foreign Agent back to the Home Agent on the home network. By selecting processing by the Foreign Network, the efficiency of the system will improve because the transmission of outbound traffic and inbound responses will not need to be tunneled through the Home Network.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 21, 2012Publication date: August 16, 2012Applicant: Nortel Networks LimitedInventors: Ahmad Muhanna, Mohamed Khalil

Publication number: 20120201222Abstract: A system and method for transitioning connectivity of a mobile node between mobility access gateways on a communication system using an inter-MAG tunneling protocols for a fast handoff. The protocols can use pre-configured or dynamic protocols on the IP-Layer or another layer on the protocol stack. In a hi-directional tunneling mechanism, the protocol and system supports the transfer of the mobility session context information for the mobile node to the next MAG in advance of the fast handoff to avoid delays and an inter-serving gateway bidirectional tunneling mechanism to allow forwarding of the mobility session traffic between new serving gateway and the prior serving gateway without ambiguity.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 5, 2010Publication date: August 9, 2012Applicant: Nortel Networks LimitedInventors: Ahmad Muhanna, Eric Parsons, Marvin Bienn

Publication number: 20120195266Abstract: The present invention supports a communication protocol for transmission of information packets between a mobile node and a virtual private network. Information packets are encapsulated and decapsulated along the route as the information packet is forwarded among the various networks on its path to the destination address; either the mobile node on a foreign network or a correspondence node on a virtual private network. A home agent on the virtual private network supports transmitting the information packets, and the information packets are transmitted from the virtual private network from the home agent or a virtual private network gateway.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 21, 2012Publication date: August 2, 2012Applicant: Nortel Networks LimitedInventors: Mohamed Khalil, Ahmad Muhanna

Publication number: 20120184294Abstract: A system and method are provided for enabling a mobile device to establish a local IP access on a packet data network connection on a femto cellular access network. A local server gateway and a macro server gateway are coupled to the femto cellular access network. A mobility management entity is coupled to the femto cellular access network, the local server gateway and the macro server gateway. The mobility management entity obtains a status mode of the mobile device and a location of the mobile device transmitted on the femto cellular access network. Publication number: 20120180130Abstract: A method of defending against a denial-of-service (DoS) attack on an IPv6 neighbor cache includes steps of determining a number of neighbor cache entries currently stored in the neighbor cache and then determining whether the number of entries exceeds a neighbor cache threshold that is less than a neighbor cache limit defining a maximum capacity of the neighbor cache. When the number of entries in the neighbor cache exceeds the neighbor cache threshold, stateless neighbor resolution is triggered. Stateless neighbor resolution entails sending a neighbor solicitation to resolve an address for an incoming packet without logging a corresponding entry in the neighbor cache. Additional techniques that complement the above method involve purging of neighbor cache entries designated as incomplete, prioritization of the entries based on trustworthiness, shortening the incomplete-status timer to less than 3 seconds, and curtailing the number of retransmissions of the neighbor solicitations.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 15, 2012Publication date: July 12, 2012Applicant: NORTEL NETWORKS LIMITEDInventors: Patrik LAHTI, Michael AALDERS

Patent number: 8219076Abstract: An access probe existing and generated within a base station to simulate a mobile terminal for the purpose of testing base station receive functionality within a communications system. The access probe data is injected at baseband rather than at RF to eliminate the need for analog/RF circuitry. The access probe performs injection at the front end of the base station receiver to exercise as much receive data path as possible. A unique ID is embedded in the access probes so that the communications system is aware which probes within a sequence were received successfully and at what power level. Within in-field applications, the unique ID allows the communications system to distinguish simulated access probes from those corresponding to real mobiles.Type: GrantFiled: July 19, 2005Date of Patent: July 10, 2012Assignee: Nortel Networks LimitedInventors: Ganesh Sundararajan, Edward Ken Kiu Mah, Neil McGowan

Publication number: 20120151212Abstract: The invention is a new protocol for securing the communication link between the Home Agent and the Mobile Node. A cipher key and an integrity key are generated at a home AAA server and are also generated independently at the Mobile Node. The two keys generated at the home AAA server are transmitted to the Home Agent to secure information packets transmitted between the Mobile Node and the Home Agent. The cipher key and integrity key are used to establish a security association used for information packet transmissions. The cipher key is used to encrypt the information packets, and the integrity key is used to ensure that the contents of the encrypted message are not altered.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 24, 2012Publication date: June 14, 2012Applicant: Nortel Networks LimitedInventors: Kuntal Chowdhury, Anand Palanigounder
