Abstract: Apparatus for aligning an article, for example an optical fiber, relative to a datum, for example a Vee groove, another fiber, or a light source, includes means for manipulating the article in two intersecting directions. The manipulating means comprises a part fixed relative to the datum and a first arm coupled to the fixed part by a hinge. A second arm is coupled by a second hinge to the first arm at a position adjacent the first hinge. Adjacent its proximal end, the second arm carries a mount for the fiber. The arrangement is such that pivoting of the first arm displaces the mount in one of the intersecting directions. Pivoting of the second arm displaces the mount in the other of the intersecting directions. Preferably, the fixed part, hinges and arms are integral with one another, substantially eliminating play and backlash. The apparatus affords precise manipulation of articles such as single-mode optical fibers prior to and during fusion splicing.
Abstract: The valve, according to the illustrated embodiment, comprises an annular chamber formed of concentric inner and outer walls, the outer wall having, in the periphery thereof, a multiplicity of equally spaced apart rectangular slots. An annulus, having a corresponding multiplicity of slots, is rotatably journalled, concentrically, on the outer periphery of the outer wall in order that, upon rotation thereof, relative to the annular chamber, the slots in the wall, and those in the annulus, come into or out of registry. A crank mechanism is coupled between the annulus, and the structure defining the annular chamber, to selectively rotate the annulus through a limited arc to bring the slots into and out of such registry. The valve is used to throttle the velocity of compressed gas product conducted thereto by a gas compressor, and to subdivide compressed gas issuing therefrom into a multiplicity of fine jets.
Abstract: In the first embodiment, the invention comprises an imperforate turbine wheel having a hub of polygonal cross-section engageable with a hollow shaft of polygonal conformation, and a thrust collar and bolt for fastening the shaft and wheel together.

Abstract: An improvement for extending the stable operating range of a centrifugal compressor comprises a circumferentially extending series of slots adjacent the leading edges of a series of compressor vanes such that there is relative motion between the series of slots and the vanes as the compressor impeller is driven in rotation.

Abstract: A gas turbine has a combustion chamber of toroidal configuration that includes separation structure dividing the combustion chamber into an annular primary zone and an annular dilution zone. Injection of compressor discharge air into the primary zone sets up a toroidal recirculation pattern of generally circular cross-sectional configuration. Fuel slinger structure at the inner periphery of the primary zone has a generally cylindrical surface for receiving and distributing fuel in a thin sheet for discharge in a radially outward direction as minute droplets towards the center of the toroidal recirculation pattern. The radial flow of the fuel droplets interacts with said toroidal recirculation pattern and provides intimate mixing of fuel and air, and resulting efficient combustion within said primary zone. The resulting combustion product flows from the primary zone past the separation structure into the dilution zone.

Abstract: A gas turbine includes a rotatable unit having a compression component and an expansion component, and a toroidal combustion chamber between the compression and expansion components. The gas turbine has a gas flow path serially through the compression component, the combustion chamber and the expansion component. A first bearing assembly is positioned on the side of the compression component remote from the combustion chamber and a second bearing assembly is positioned on the side of the expansion component remote from the combustion chamber so that the rotatable unit is unsupported between the compression and expansion components and no bearing structures are in the vicinity of the combustion chamber.
