  • Patent number: 6327478
Abstract: A method of and system for processing calls to a wireless unit determines if the wireless unit is in a “page-only” mode or otherwise unavailable to receive the call. If said wireless unit is unavailable to receive the call, system determines if the calling party would like to send a page to the wireless unit. If so, the system sends a short message to the wireless unit. The short message identifies the calling party and provides an option to receive the call. When the wireless unit receives the short message page, the called party can elect to receive the call by sending short message response to the system. When the system receives the short message response, the system completes the call to said wireless unit if the short message response indicates selection of the option to receive the call.

  • Patent number: 6285881
Abstract: The method of quickly locating non-standard control channels in private cellular systems is accomplished in an embodiment of the present invention by determining the modulation type of a particular channel. The mobile station scans a received RF channel. The received signal is used for the evaluation of the modulation type of that channel by using matched filters designed for the specific signal of interest, and/or in another embodiment of the present invention is used for producing the spectral energy distribution of the channel revealing the type of modulation.

  • Patent number: 5857020
Abstract: A service methodology based on distribution of secured content, such as, movies, music, games, information and the like, whereby revenue may be generated for premier and pay-per-use access to the secured content. The service is manifested by the combination of a video disk reader, controller and authorization center. A service provider, for instance, locks up a movie on a video disk for which a premier event viewing date and time may be defined and which the provider may then directly distribute, in advance of the premier event, to potential consumers. Each consumer may purchase the right to view the movie once for a certain fee, for example $5.00, through online access from the controller to the authorization center, but the single viewing will only be allowed by the controller on or after the premier event. Thereafter, the consumer pays for viewing of the movie on a pay-per-use basis or over a defined window of time, perhaps for reduced fee, such as $1.00.

  • Patent number: 5844436
Abstract: To reduce drift in a sampling clock for framed data, a phase detector senses the time difference between (i) the time when a reference mark for the framed data is received and (ii) the time when the nominal number of oversampling clock cycles between reference timing marks is received. This difference is output to a clock controller which chooses a phase change rate based thereon. This phase change rate is applied to an oversampling clock to continuously, progressively, change the phase of the oversampling clock in a sense which tends to reduce this phase error. The phase changing clock is divided down by a frequency divider to generate a sampling clock. The phase of the oversampling clock is changed by generating multiple, equally spaced, phases of the oversampling clock and progressively changing the selection of the active phase.

  • Patent number: 5719508
Abstract: A digital loss of lock detection (LLD) device for a phase looked loop (PLL) generates a locked frequency signal synchronized with a reference frequency signal. The LLD comprises first to fifth latching means for detecting when the reference clock failed high/low, when the locked clock failed high/low and when the reference clock is outside the tracking range of the PLL. The first to fifth latching means provide respectively a first to fifth error signals for each type of the above faults.

  • Patent number: 5436933
Abstract: Idle channel noise reduction is achieved in a line card having an analog gain/attenuator, a codec, and a digital signal processor including an equalizer and a digital gain/attenuator. A peak detector samples output from the codec each 8 kHz cycle. A level decision compares the sample to a stored peak value, and replaces the stored peak value with the sample if it is greater. A controller, at a second predetermined interval, increases analog gain in steps and increases digital attenuation in similar steps if the stored peak value is greater than the predetermined threshold. Otherwise, the controller increases analog attenuation in steps and increases digital gain in similar steps.

  • Patent number: 5148113
Abstract: A phase error integrator for determining the phase error between a data signal and a clock signal frequency locked to the data signal has a data input and a clock input. In one embodiment the phase error integrator is formed as two functional components, namely a phase error detector and an integrator chain. The phase error detector sends to the integrator one of two output signals depending on whether the phase error is positive or negative. The integrator chain has a number of outputs the first half of which initially have a binary 1 and the second half of which initially have a binary 0. Depending on which output signal arrives from the phase error detector the binary 1's shift right or the binary 0's shift left. The integrator may be combined with a delay block connected to the outputs of the integrator chain. The data signal is fed to the delay block and delayed data output signal is obtained which is connected to the data input of the phase error integrator.

  • Patent number: 4872739
Abstract: An optical busbar, for optically interconnecting electronic and/or photonic equipment, comprises a rod of light-transmissive material, for example polycarbonate, having a longitudinal planar surface. Preferably the rod is of polygonal cross-sectional shape. Distributed along its length, opposite the planar surface, the rod has a plurality of inclined reflector surfaces for diverting light travelling along the rod so that it emerges laterally at intervals corresponding to the spacing of the reflector surfaces. When the rod is installed on a backplane of the equipment, with a plurality of circuit cards projecting perpendicularly from the backplane, optoelectrical devices on the circuit cards are arranged to be in register with the inclined reflector surfaces. Optical signals transmitted along the optical busbar will be distributed to the circuit cards. The optical conductor will, of course, function with the light travelling in the opposite direction, i.e.

  • Patent number: 4627049
Abstract: One of the transmission facilities of a TASI system is used as an order wire, via which channel signalling information and assignment information are transmitted. Signalling information is transmitted periodically in frames on the order wire for only some of the channels, connected to the system, at any one time. Accordingly, the assignment information consists of both channel-to-facility assignment information, relating to the assignment of channels to the other facilities, and channel signalling assignment information, relating to the assignment of channels to signalling bit time channels in the frames on the order wire. One assignment can be transmitted in each frame, and frames not used for transmitting assignment information can be used for transmitting commands and messages. The system avoids the need to transmit multi-tone signals preceding speech bursts on the transmission facilities and avoids lengthy delays in the transmission of channel signalling information.

  • Patent number: 4298630
Abstract: An electrical conductor has a coating or layer of U-V cured material on the metallic conducting member. The ultra-violet cured coating is partially cured before application of pulp insulation. Further curing then produces a chemical bond between the ultra-violet cured coat and the pulp insulation to assist in holding the pulp on the conducting member. The conductor is economic to produce while providing an efficient moisture barrier between the pulp insulation and conducting member.
