  • Patent number: 9778027
Abstract: An apparatus and method for determining contours of a patient's foot ankle and lower leg. The apparatus includes an alignment structure that orientates the foot for imaging. The alignment structure includes at least one support member that engages the plantar surface of the foot substantially only in the immediate area of the lateral metatarsal heads of the foot, preferably the fifth metatarsal head. The support generates a dorsally-directed force that locks the midtarsal joint. The alignment structure further includes a saddle that engages the rearfoot and a laser beam for aligning the second metatarsal head with the distal one-third of the lower leg to place the subtalar joint in a neutral condition. The foot is thus suspended in space such that imaging is able to produce an accurate measurement of the subject areas of the foot, ankle and lower leg without distortion of the soft tissues or bone structure.

  • Patent number: 9194696
Abstract: An apparatus and method for determining contours of a patient's foot. The apparatus includes an alignment section that orientates the foot relative to an optical imaging section. The alignment section includes at least one support member located proximate a focal length of the imaging section, that engages the plantar surface substantially only in the immediate area of the fifth metatarsal head of the foot. The support generates a dorsally-directed load that locks the midtarsal joint. The alignment section further includes a heel stirrup and a laser beam or other reference line for aligning the second metatarsal head with the distal one-third of the lower leg, to place the subtalar joint in a neutral condition. The foot is thus suspended in space such that the imaging section is able to obtain an accurate measurement of the plantar surface without distortion of the soft tissues or bone structure of the foot.

  • Patent number: 7124518
Abstract: An orthotic insert assembly having a stationary heel post with a guide slot and an unattached rigid plate member with a depending peg that is received in the slot. The peg cooperates with the guide slot to control and direct a medial-to-lateral rocking movement of the plate member as the wearer's foot progresses through the gait cycle. The slot may be angled to impose a predetermined direction on the rocking movement.

  • Patent number: 6745501
Abstract: A removable orthotic insert for improving the gait of a person suffering from diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, or other condition that impairs proper transfer of weight to the forefoot. There is a rigid cap member having a downwardly extending, transverse ridge located proximate the junction between the arch and forefoot portions of the insert, behind the metatarsal head area of the foot. The ridge engages the underlying insole of the shoe to form a pivot point that enables the insert to rock forwardly and rearwardly in the shoe. As the person's foot moves through the gait cycle, the transfer of weight towards the forward end of the foot causes the rigid cap member to tilt forwardly in the shoe, enhancing the angular orientation of the foot as the toe-off position is reached.

  • Patent number: 6485661
Abstract: A composite material blank for an orthotic insert. The device is formed of layers of fiberglass and graphite fiber material. A first graphite fiber layer provides the overall structure with increased strength, while secondary graphite fiber reinforcement strips are arranged below the first and fifth rays of the foot to provide additional rigidity and control in these areas. The edges of the graphite fiber layers are recessed inwardly from the edges of the fiberglass layers so as to provide a graphite-free border which prevents cracks from propagating into the graphite fiber layers. The layers are bonded together by heat curing over molds.

  • Patent number: 6269555
Abstract: A two-piece orthotic insert assembly. A post member is fixedly mounted in the heel end of a shoe, and has a generally concave bearing surface. A separate plate member is placed in the shoe so that the heel end thereof rests in the post, the heel cup of the plate member having a generally convex lower bearing surface which engages the concave bearing surface in the post member so as to permit a predetermined range of pivoting motion between the two pieces. The concave upper bearing surface of the post member defines a generally U-shaped bearing area which supports the rear foot portion of the plate at a predetermined angle for heel strike. Following heel strike, the plate member pivots so as to permit a controlled amount of pronation of the foot.

  • Patent number: 5722186
Abstract: An orthotic insert adapted to be placed within a shoe having an insole. The orthotic insert has a relatively rigid, resilient base member having a heel portion and an arch portion. The upper surface of the base member is contoured to fit the plantar surface of a person's foot, so as to position the foot in a generally desired angular orientation. At least one curvilinear ridge is formed on the lower surface of the base member, and extends continuously around the rearward end of the heel portion and along the arch portion on both sides of the longitudinal axis of the orthotic insert. The ridge has a sharp lower edge which projects downwardly from the lower surface of the base member for supporting the heel seat in the heel section above the insole when the orthotic insert is placed within the shoe. The lower edge of the ridge is adapted to have material incrementally removed therefrom so that the angular orientation of the foot can be adjusted to suit an individual person.

  • Patent number: 5507056
Abstract: An apparatus for internally expanding an article of footwear. A hand-operated pressure assembly is provided, in which a knob is manually rotated in order to transversely extend first and second piston members. Hemispherical bearing surfaces on the ends of the piston members are received in corresponding receptacles formed in the legs of a hinged spreader assembly; as the pistons extend outwardly, the spreader assembly is forced against and stretches a selected interior portion of the article of footwear. Cupped overlay members are provided for detachable mounting to the legs of the spreader assembly so as to permit selective adjustment of its width to match that of the particular shoe or boot on which the work is being performed. Preferably, the hydraulic fluid which is used in the pressure assembly is ordinary tap water, so that leakage does not represent a hazard in a retail environment.

  • Patent number: 5394626
Abstract: A relatively rigid cap is made of a material which is deformable at moderately elevated temperatures. A flexible blank contoured to fit a person's foot is placed against the cap which is at the elevated temperature, and these two are placed against the plantar surface of the foot. A plastic bag is placed around the cap, the blank and the foot, and a blank is applied to conform the cap and the blank to the person's foot so as to make a custom fit orthotic. Upon cooling, the cap remains properly contoured relative to the plantar surface of the foot.
