  • Publication number: 20220259057
Abstract: Salt components of dross can be extracted efficiently through evaporation. During dross treatment, temperatures can be permitted to approach or exceed the boiling point of one or more salt components of the dross, preferably in an oxidizing environment. The temperature can be held sufficiently high such that the salt content can exert an appreciable vapor pressure and can be held for a sufficient time to permit most, all, or substantially all of the salt content to evaporate and be carried away from the kiln in combustion gasses. The evaporated salt can be condensed and collected.

  • Publication number: 20220251680
Abstract: A two stage dross treatment capable of being performed in a single reaction vessel is disclosed. Dross, especially white dross, can be contacted with salt flux in a rotary furnace to recover metal from the dross. This first stage can recover metal during the conversion of white dross and salt flux to salt cake. In a second stage, the furnace can be raised to a sufficiently high temperature to evaporate the salt content of the salt cake, allowing the evaporated salt to exit the furnace and be separately condensed and collected. The result of the second stage is collected salt and salt-free oxides. After removing the salt-free oxides, residual heat in the furnace and collected salt can be used for a subsequent dross treatment.

  • Patent number: 11383296
Abstract: Systems and methods are disclosed for using magnetic fields (e.g., changing magnetic fields) to control metal flow conditions during casting (e.g., casting of an ingot, billet, or slab). The magnetic fields can be introduced using rotating permanent magnets or electromagnets. The magnetic fields can be used to induce movement of the molten metal in a desired direction, such as in a rotating pattern around the surface of the molten sump. The magnetic fields can be used to induce metal flow conditions in the molten sump to increase homogeneity in the molten sump and resultant ingot.

  • Patent number: 11268765
Abstract: System and method for using fast response heaters to pre-heat metal before entering a metal treatment furnace, which may improve control over metal processing, especially in response to changes in material, mass flow rate, line speed, and/or desired treatment process. Fast response heaters may be used with control systems to adjust the output of the fast response heater based on operator inputs, direct or indirect sensing of process parameters, and/or the use of thermal models to quickly adjust fast response heater output while a metal treatment furnace remains at a constant temperature or slowly transitions into a new operating state. The resulting gains in process control result in higher quality products, reduced scrap, and increases in line speed and output.

  • Patent number: 11241871
Abstract: Improved aluminum can end stock (CES) is disclosed. The CES includes a laminated, amorphous polymer coating exhibiting low feathering, low blushing, and high performance in an acetic acid test. The laminated metal strip can include the laminated polymer coating on an interior-facing side and a lacquered coating on an exterior-facing side. The CES is formed by performing an annealing process on the laminated metal strip, wherein the metal strip is raised to an annealing temperature above the melting point of the polymer for a sufficient duration to render the polymer amorphous. In some cases, the polymer film laminated to the metal strip is a Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) film.

  • Patent number: 11213870
Abstract: A substrate (e.g., metal or non-metal sheet) can have multiple textures on a surface of the substrate. The various textures can be impressed or applied on the surface of the substrate by passing the substrate between multiple pairs of work rolls that each include at least one textured work roll for transferring a texture of the work roll onto the surface of the substrate. The pairs of work rolls apply the various textures on the surface of the substrate while maintaining a thickness of the substrate (e.g., with substantially no reduction in a thickness of the substrate). A single pass of the substrate between the pairs of work rolls can allow various different textures, patterns, or features to be applied to the surface of the substrate while the thickness of the substrate remains substantially constant.

  • Publication number: 20210372470
Abstract: A non-contact steering device includes one or more magnetic rotors positioned near a metal strip. Each rotor includes one or more permanent magnets and rotates to impart a changing magnetic field on the metal strip passing nearby. The magnetic rotors can rotate around an axis of rotation that is parallel to the longitudinal direction of travel of the metal strip. The magnetic rotors can be positioned to impart forces on the strip in any combination of laterally, vertically, or longitudinally. A control mechanism can control the rotor speed, rotor direction, vertical position of the rotors, vertical spacing between rotors, and/or lateral position of the rotors. In some cases, the control mechanism can be coupled to sensors, such as a light curtain and a laser distance sensor, in order to provide closed loop feedback control of a metal strip passing through the non-contact magnetic rotor steering device.
