  • Method for measuring erythrocyte deformability

    Abstract: A method and means for measuring erythrocyte deformability is provided comprising an absorbent strip and a filter membrane, the membrane characterized by pores having a mean pore size in the range of 3.0 to 8.0 microns, the membrane and the strip being in at least partial cofacial contact. A 10 microliter sample of blood is drawn through the membrane by capillary action and flows along the absorbent strip. The time required for the blood to traverse a predetermined lateral distance along the strip is recorded.
