Abstract: A method and apparatus for molding articles such as ophthalmic devices to provide high surface smoothness without the formation of flock anywhere on the molded articles. A predetermined quantity of moldable material is arranged between spaced apart molding surfaces between which as an outer boundary a meniscus is formed. The configuration of the meniscus is controlled as by moving the molding surfaces toward each other to produce convex rounding of the moldable material forming the meniscus. Heating of the molds is controlled to accelerate the polymerization of the moldable material. The molding surface are moved when the moldable material attains a predetermined gel state.
