Abstract: A small arms projectile for a small arms weapon is provided within a cartridge cover (1). A release element (15) is provided for preventing movement of the projectile's initiator (11) into an armed position. A channel (5) is formed between the initiator (11) and the projectile's explosive charge (8) and a slidable shield (6) is provided therein. An insert element (10) is also located in the channel for preventing movement of the shield (6) into its armed position. The insert element (10) is held in place by the cartridge cover (1). When the projectile exits the cartridge cover (1) following firing, the insert element (10) is configured to move out of the channel (5) to allow the shield (6) to move into its armed position.

When the projectile exits the cartridge cover (1) and the weapon=s barrel following firing, the release element (15) is configured to move out of the engagement position to release the initiator (11), and the insert element (10) is configured to move out of the channel (5) to allow the shielding means (6) to move into its armed position.

Abstract: A projectile for a weapon comprises an axially movable firing pin, an initiator actuable when impinged by the firing pin, a plurality of external peripheral fins movable from a radially inward position to a radially outward position when the projectile leaves the weapon, fin engaging means for moving each fin from the radially inward position to the radially outward position and for maintaining each fin in the radially outward position, and internal actuating means for actuating the fin engaging means to engage and thereby move the fins to deploy from the radially inward to the radially outward position as the projectile leaves the weapon.

Abstract: A small arms projectile for a small arms weapon, which projectile comprises a warhead (116) having an explosive charge (not shown), an initiator (102), and a firing pin (not shown). The initiator has safe and armed conditions and is capable of detonating the explosive charge of the warhead when the initiator is in the armed condition and impacted with sufficient force by the firing pin. The projectile further comprises shielding means (106) positioned between the initiator and the explosive charge of the warhead, which shielding means is slidable from a safety position in which the shielding means shields the explosive charge of the warhead from the initiator, to an armed position in which the initiator is capable of detonating the explosive charge of the warhead. The shielding means is slidable from the safe to the armed position in response to the initiator moving from the safe to the armed condition.

Abstract: A projectile (1) for a small arms weapon having a muzzle, the projectile having a casing (2) and fins (3), pivotally mounted upon said casing and urged outwardly of the casing, for automatic deployment after leaving the muzzle; wherein the casing is disposed within a cartridge having a sleeve surrounding the casing and fins; the cartridge also containing a propellant charge intended, when detonated, to propel the projectile out of the muzzle; and wherein shielding means (6) is provided to shield said fins and/or their pivotal mountings, at least in part, from the detonation of said propellant.
