Abstract: A method and an extractor for pressing out plasma and buffy coat from a collapsible blood container (1), in which blood has been divided, by centrifugation, into a plasma layer, a buffy coat layer and a layer of red blood cells. The plasma and then the buffy coat are pressed out each through a separate outlet tube (2) or through a common outlet tube (2), which is connected to the top portion of the blood container, a pulsating pressure being applied to a top section of the blood container (1) during the end phase of the pressing-out of buffy coat. The extractor has a stationary support surface (6) and a movable pressing member (7), between which the blood container is suspended and subjected to a compressive force in order to press out the plasma and then the buffy coat through the outlet tube (2).
Abstract: Apparatus for centrifugal separation of liquid mixtures is disclosed including an inner circular bag and an outer annular bag which has an inner diameter corresponding to the outer diameter of the inner circular bag, a connecting channel for providing fluid communication between the inner and outer bags, and a rigid circular mount for mounting the outer annular bag for centrifugation in a manner such that the outer annular bag adopts a conical configuration by shortening its inner diameter. Methods for centrifugal separation of thrombocyte suspensions and bone marrow cells using this apparatus are also disclosed.
Abstract: Thawed glycerolized red blood cells are washed in a system (1) of closed collapsible containers of flexible material which are positioned concentrically in a centrifuge rotor. The blood cells are held in an annular primary container (2) into which wash liquid is centrifugally fed from a c entral container (3) and from which supernatant is expressed into a central waste container (4) while the primary container is being compressed as a result of centrifugal action on an elastic body (24) in the rotor. A container assembly (1) for use in carrying out the washing comprises an annular collapsible primary container (2), a collapsible circular closed wash liquid container (3), a collapsible circular, closed waste container (4), and valve controlled conduits for passing liquid from the wash liquid container into the primary container and from the primary container into the waste container.
Abstract: A method for plasmapheresis includes withdrawal of a quantity of blood from a blood donor to an annular primary container forming part of a closed flexible processing assembly positioned in a processing space provided in a centrifuge rotor and conformed to the processing assembly. During the withdrawal, the rotor is caused to perform an oscillating movement for agitating the blood whereupon the blood is centrifuged in the primary container to be separated into blood cells and plasma. While the centrifugation is going on, the primary container is compressed to expel the plasma fraction to a secondary container. Liquid diluent is then fed to the primary container to resuspend the blood cell fraction while agitation is again accomplished by oscillating the rotor, whereupon the blood cell fraction is returned to the blood donor.
