Patent number: 6399803Abstract: This invention is directed to a process for separating a first triglyceride comprising a docosahexaenoic acid residue from a second triglyceride. The process comprises introducing a feed mixture comprising the first triglyceride and the second triglyceride into a chromatographic separation zone, and then isolating a fraction of the feed mixture in the separation zone that has a mass ratio of the first triglyceride to the second triglyceride that is greater than in the feed mixture. The separation zone comprises a stationary phase which comprises metal ions that are capable of coordinating with a double bond of a fatty acid residue of the first triglyceride to form a metal complex with the fatty acid residue.Type: GrantFiled: February 17, 2000Date of Patent: June 4, 2002Assignee: Omegatech, Inc.Inventors: David G. Patent number: 6395778Abstract: This invention is directed to a process for making an enriched mixture comprising a polyunsaturated fatty acid ester having the Formula (V): In one embodiment, this process comprises transesterifying an oil from Schizochytrium sp. with an alcohol in the presence of a base to form a saturated fatty acid ester and the polyunsaturated fatty acid ester (the fatty acid esters are formed from the alcohol and fatty acid residues of at least one glyceride in the oil). Urea is subsequently dissolved in a medium comprising the fatty acid esters to form a medium comprising the fatty acid esters and dissolved urea. This medium is then cooled or concentrated to form (a) a precipitate comprising urea and at least a portion of the saturated fatty acid ester, and (b) a liquid fraction comprising at least most of the polyunsaturated fatty acid ester. Afterward, the precipitate and liquid fraction are separated.Type: GrantFiled: January 11, 2001Date of Patent: May 28, 2002Assignee: OmegaTech, Inc.Inventor: Devanand L. Luthria
