Abstract: A two-stage syngas production method to produce a final product gas from a carbonaceous material includes producing a first product gas in a first reactor, separating char from the first product gas to produce separated char and char-depleted product gas, and separately reacting the separated char and the char-depleted product gas with an oxygen-containing gas in a second reactor to produce a final product gas. The separated char is introduced into the second reactor above the char-depleted product gas. The solids separation device may include serially connected cyclones, and the separated char may be entrained in a motive fluid in an eductor to produce a char and motive fluid mixture prior to being transferred to the second reactor. A biorefinery method produces a purified product from the final product gas.

Abstract: A high-integrity electromechanical actuator control system includes a system function controller, a plurality of actuator controllers, and at least one electromechanical actuator. Each actuator controller includes a first controller, a second controller, and a duty cycle computation circuit. The first controller receives digital actuator control commands supplied from two of the function control channels and supplies first digital duty cycle commands. The second controller receives digital actuator control commands supplied from two function control channels and supplies second digital duty cycle commands. The duty cycle computation circuit receives the first digital duty cycle commands and the second digital duty cycle commands, computes an average of the first and second duty cycle commands, and generates pulse width modulated (PWM) commutation control signals based on the computed average.

Abstract: Embodiments of the present disclosure include methods, apparatuses, systems, and computer program product for enabling multi-point shunt calibration of a sensor device. Multi-point shunt calibration provides at least a first, second, and third simulated calibration output, each simulated calibration output corresponding to an actual reading value and an expected reading value. The simulated calibration outputs are associated with a predefined output sequence, where each simulated calibration output is separated from an adjacent simulated calibration output by an output step size. Some embodiments are configured for automatically outputting each simulated calibration output for a particular period of time before outputting an adjacent simulated calibration output in the predefined output sequence. The various simulated calibration outputs, actual reading values, and/or expected values may be used in determining calibrated reading values for the sensor device.

Abstract: A system comprises an optical air data system that measures aerosol and molecular scattering of light, and an optical instrument that measures aerosol and/or molecular scattering of light. A processor receives data from the air data system and from the optical instrument. The processor performs one or more signal analysis and data fusion methods comprising: (a) determining aerosol and/or molecular concentration from the received data, modifying a data analysis algorithm to optimize any remaining unknown parameters, and outputting enhanced air data parameters; (b) determining aerosol concentration from the received data, dynamically optimizing hardware settings in the air data system to enhance a signal level and avoid system saturation, and outputting enhanced air data parameters; or (c) determining aerosol and/or molecular concentration from the received data, estimating a confidence level of an air data algorithm, verifying optical health of the air data system, and reporting the optical health to a user.

Abstract: The magnitude and frequency of a peak in detected vibrational energy emitted from a component that includes a periodic portion is provided to monitor the component for faults. A Fast Fourier Transform of the signal is taken to generate a spectrum. A maximum index in the spectrum is found between a determined frequency bound. An array of parameters is generated and a determined optimized transform root is used on the array of parameters. An interpolated peak location is estimated based on the array and an interpolated frequency is found based on the peak location. An interpolated magnitude is then determined. The use of the optimized transform root in the processing results in significant improvements to the magnitude and frequency estimations, which can improve, for example, detection of defects from vibration spectra of rotating components, estimates of energy radiated from an electronic component, or analysis of spectral content of ionizing radiation.
Abstract: A system for sensor thermal management and stabilization comprises a sensor block, one or more sensors mounted on the sensor block, one or more heaters mounted on the sensor block, a chassis coupled to the sensor block, a thermal conductor moveably coupled between the sensor block and the chassis, and a thermal control actuation mechanism operatively connected to the thermal conductor. The thermal control actuation mechanism is operative to cause the thermal conductor to vary a total thermal conductance from the sensor block to the chassis by moving the thermal conductor toward the chassis or away from the chassis. The total thermal conductance is varied to provide an optimized thermal stability and optimized environmental range of applicability for the one or more sensors.
Abstract: A self-heating warming blanket includes a pliable outer shell forming a liquid impermeable enclosure. A heat generation layer disposed inside the enclosure has a plurality of liquid permeable heater compartments containing an exothermic reactant. The blanket also has a heater activation system including a sealed bladder containing an activator liquid inside the enclosure. An activation strip extends from outside the outer shell into the enclosure. One segment of the strip is an unsealing segment connected to the bladder. Another segment of the strip is a handle segment outside the outer shell. Pulling on the handle segment opens the bladder and releases the activator liquid into the enclosure where at least a portion of it permeates at least one heater compartment and combines with the exothermic reactant contained therein to initiate an exothermic chemical reaction that heats the warming blanket.
Abstract: Methods and related systems for diagnosing a loss of capacity of a heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system are disclosed. In an embodiment, the method includes summing a runtime of an auxiliary heat source of the HVAC system over a plurality of time blocks. Additionally, the method includes summing an expected runtime of the auxiliary heat source over the plurality of time blocks. Further, the method includes comparing the runtime sum with the expected runtime sum, wherein the expected runtime for each of the plurality of time blocks is a function of an outdoor ambient temperature over a time-delay block beginning before the corresponding time block.
