    Abstract: Methods and devices for usage profile based remote firmware upgrades for fire alarm system gateways are described herein. A method, includes creating a firmware upgrade package for a number of gateways of a number of fire alarm systems wherein each gateway has gateway operating firmware, panel connectivity firmware, and management firmware and wherein the firmware upgrade package has multiple parts, creating a firmware upgrade profile having information indicating the applicability of each of the multiple parts of the firmware upgrade package to one of the gateway operating firmware, panel connectivity firmware, and management firmware, comparing the firmware upgrade profile to a gateway usage profile of a particular gateway wherein the gateway usage profile contains information indicating usage characteristics for the gateway operating firmware, panel connectivity firmware, and management firmware, and selecting one or more of the multiple parts of the firmware upgrade package to download.

    Abstract: A fuel-fired burner 100 includes a combustion air inlet 113 for receiving combustion air coupled to a combustion air nozzle 136 at an input to a second chamber 152 within a burner housing 110 spaced apart from a third chamber 168 within the second chamber. The combustion air nozzle 136 directs the combustion air 171 into the third chamber 168. A fuel inlet 111 coupled to a burner nozzle 167 secured to a burner mounting plate 161 has a recycle port 164 for receiving hot exhaust gas provided to an exhaust gas path 165. A jet pump located entirely inside the burner housing is configured to receive the hot exhaust gas from the exhaust gas path. The jet pump operates by flowing the combustion air through the combustion air nozzle 136 which suctions in the hot exhaust gas through the recycle port into the exhaust gas path then into a gas mixing zone 178 for mixing the hot exhaust gas and the combustion air.

    Abstract: A method for fiber-to-chip coupling is disclosed. The method comprises providing a photonic integrated circuit (PIC) that includes a substrate, a cladding layer on the substrate, and at least one waveguide embedded in the cladding layer, wherein the at least one waveguide has a waveguide interface. An optical fiber is positioned adjacent to the PIC, wherein the optical fiber has a fiber interface, and the fiber interface is aligned with the waveguide interface. A flowable inorganic oxide in liquid form is added to an area between the fiber interface and the waveguide interface. Thereafter, heat is applied to the area between the fiber interface and the waveguide interface for a period of time to cure the inorganic oxide, such that the optical fiber is coupled to the PIC. The cured inorganic oxide has a refractive index that substantially matches the refractive indices of the cladding layer and the optical fiber.

A communication system communicates the determined state of the device to a remote location.
