  • Patent number: 7490359
Abstract: A lightweight face shield which protects the face of the wearer from debris and/or hazardous materials, such as biological materials, and is particularly well suited for medical and dental applications. The face shield utilizes a two-piece tiered structure with a preferably canted retention frame joined through an inclined structure member to a shield frame member below which is retained a transparent shield, and above which a minishield. The shield frame member is retained forward of the retention frame member so as to retain the peripheral portions of the shield separated from the face of the user, providing improved ventilation and reduced fogging of the transparent shield. A trampoline style support arm is described that provides solid retention, compliant comfort, and reduced material requirements. Optional locking hinge assemblies for the support arms and a nose bridge are also described.

  • Publication number: 20070240732
Abstract: A dental flossing apparatus having a body with extending retention arms configured for retaining a length of dental floss under tension between the arms. The tension is applied between resilient arms and biased into tension by means of legs coupled to said arms which are manipulated and optionally locked together. By way of example, a bore extending into the bead may be engaged over a post extending proximal the end of the retention arms. Other forms of engaging the floss with the ends of the retention arms are also described. The body of the flossing device or the beads may be configured in the shape of animals, action figures, characters, or other objects to enhance entertainment value. Floss for the flossing device comprise short sections of floss with a bead near each end, which may be separated from a roll of floss upon which a plurality of beads are affixed.

  • Patent number: 7033075
Abstract: A radiographic sensor retention apparatus for retaining a radiographic sensor and allowing it to be properly positioned within the mouth of a dental patient during x-ray image registration. The apparatus is held in position within the mouth of the patient in response to biting pressure from the upper and lower dental surfaces, and comprises a bite block with an extending first jaw member, a second jaw member slidably engaged with the bite block, and a threadable member connecting the second jaw member to either the bite block or the first jaw member, wherein the separation between the jaws is continuously variable in response to the rotation of the threadable member. Compliant members are preferably joined to one or both of the jaw members to aid in distributing the retention forces and to reduce sensor slippage. The bite block is preferably configured for the attachment of at least one alignment guide.

  • Patent number: 6016808
Abstract: A face shield frame apparatus having a head worn frame assembly to which a face shield can be detachably coupled. The frame assembly includes a pair of generally parallel, spaced apart side members which are joined to a front member, which is supported by the wearer's nose or forehead. One or more receptacles are provided on the frame assembly which slidably engage one or more latch arms associated with the face shield support, or conversely, the receptacle may be attached to the face shield support and the latch arm attached to the frame assembly. The latch arm has a locking tab which fits within a slot on the receptacle to lock the latch arm to the receptacle when the latch arm is inserted into the receptacle. The latch arm can also be removed from the receptacle by depressing the locking tab so that it disengages from the slot.

  • Patent number: 5951183
Abstract: A shielded writing apparatus for preventing cross-contamination between a writer's hand and the writing surface and a writing instrument. The apparatus comprises a plate, a finger handle protruding outwardly from the upper surface of the plate and a sheath attached by a flexible cord to the finger handle, such that the sheath is maintained by the cord in a substantially vertical position. The sheath is adapted to receive a writing instrument and maintains the writing instrument in a generally vertical position when not in use. The finger handle is grasped by the last finger and the adjacent finger/s of the writing hand, while the thumb and forefinger holds the sheath containing the writing instrument, in a customary writing fashion. As the writer writes with the writing instrument, the apparatus moves along the writing surface along with the hand such that the plate forms a barrier between the butt of the hand and the writing surface.

  • Patent number: 5881745
Abstract: A dental floss apparatus generally comprising a thimble, a pair of tines extending from the top surface of the thimble and a section of dental floss suspended between the tips of the tines. To floss, a forefinger or thumb is typically inserted into the thimble, which remains relatively fixed onto the forefinger or thumb by pressing the opposing forefinger or thumb on the same hand onto the side of the thimble. The thimble is sized and configured such that insertion of the forefinger or thumb causes a suction within the thimble that further aids holding the thimble. The section of dental floss across the tips is used to floss between the teeth. In an alternate configuration, a single tine extends upward from said thimble and dental floss is suspended between the tip of the tine and the thimble. In still another configuration, a second thimble is attached in tandem onto the first thimble for additional torque control.
