    Abstract: A laminated shingle has a rendered shadow design when placed with other similar shingles on a roof deck. The laminated shingle includes an overlay member and an underlay member fixedly attached to each other. The overlay member includes an upper or headlap portion and a lower or exposed butt portion with one or more tabs separated by cutouts. The overlay member is also coated with a layer of relatively dark granules to form horizontally-oriented overlay shading areas on the upper and lower edges of the tabs. The underlay member is coated with a layer of relatively dark granules to form vertically and horizontally-oriented underlay shading areas. In one embodiment, one or both vertical edges of each tab are generally parallel to the vertically-oriented longitudinal axis of the vertically-oriented shading area to expose a portion of the shading area.

    Abstract: A binder slurry for a continuous filament mat used in a phenolic pultrusion system comprising a phenolic compatible silane, a non-ionic surfactant, a defoamer, water, an organic acid and a bisphenol epoxy powdered resin having a thermally active dicyandiamide cross-linking resin. The binder slurry resin is unique in that the bisphenol epoxy powdered resin having a thermally active dicyandiamide cross-linking resin is compatable with presently available phenolic resins, and as such pultruded parts made have improved surface and mechanical properties as compared with traditional polyester type binder slurries which are not compatable with phenolic resins. Continuous filament mats made with the new binder slurry also may also be made into epoxy prepreg that can be used to make composite parts.

    Abstract: Methods and apparatus are provided for acoustically insulating a washing machine and, specifically, a laundry tub. An acoustical blanket of thermoplastic material extends around and insulates the laundry tub. A wall of the tub has at least one protuberance for mating with a hole of the acoustical blanket. The acoustical blanket may be crimped over a top of the wall. Protuberances include knobs and elongate members. The thermoplastic material is selected from a group consisting of a polyester, polyethylene, polyolefin, polypropylene, polyethylene terephthalate, rayon, nylon, acrylic, hemp, kenaf, cotton and combinations thereof. A facing layer(s) may additionally be provided on the acoustical blanket. The facing layer being selected from a group consisting of polyester, rayon, metallic foil and combinations thereof. The blanket may also mate directly with a cylinder around the tub.

    Abstract: A method of co-texturizing glass fibers and thermoplastic fibers comprises passing a glass fiber strand through a texturizing gun, simultaneously passing a thermoplastic fiber strand through the texturizing gun with the glass fiber strand and injecting pressurized air into the texturizing gun concurrently with the glass fiber strand and thermoplastic fiber strands. This method produces a co-texturized fiber material comprising between 20-85% by weight glass fiber and 15-80% by weight thermoplastic fiber having an overall density of from about 20 grams/liter to about 200 grams/liter, and preferably from about 20 grams/liter to less than about 30 grams/liter.

    Abstract: A method of applying blend drop granules to an asphalt coated sheet includes moving an asphalt coated sheet in a machine direction, and depositing blend drops of granules on a blend drop conveyor that is positioned above the asphalt coated sheet. The blend drop conveyor has an upper flight moving in a direction opposite the machine direction and a lower flight moving in the machine direction. The blend drops are moved from the upper flight to the lower flight of the blend drop conveyor while retaining the blend drops in contact with the blend drop conveyor by magnetic force. Finally. The blend drops are released from the blend drop conveyor for contact with the asphalt coated sheet.

    Abstract: A process and apparatus for spreading fibers in a fibrous tow provides a fiber spreader for spreading a tow of fibers moving in a machine direction having a plurality of spaced pins, where the spacing between the pins is variable relative to the machine direction, and the position of the pins is variable relative to the machine direction. Variation of the spacing and position of the pins during motion of the pins contact with a tow moving generally in the machine direction provides a spread tow of lower, more uniform areal weight for further use in product applications. Variation in pin spacing and fiber spreading results from rotation of at least one pin relative to another after the pins are inserted into a tow. Alternate techniques for fiber spreading and additional features for stress relief of fibers during the fiber spreading operation are disclosed.

    Abstract: The invention relates to a method of forming a bicomponent mat, the bicomponent mat which is formed from glass fibers and pulp fibers and methods of making a bicomponent mat. Initially in the method of forming a bicomponent mat, a pulp surface is treated with a cationic polymer in a pulp slurry. The next step involves using a surfactant to disperse glass fibers in a polyacrylamide (PAM)-based white water. The pulp slurry and the slurry of glass fibers are generally compatible and are combined to form a bicomponent furnish. The method has several advantages over conventional methods. First, conventional wet chop products typically cannot be used to form a bicomponent mat in a typical surfactant/PAM-based white water. Second, while some other fibers (such as glass fibers) may be used in the production of bicomponent mats in a typical PAM-based white water, the mat forming process is frequently interrupted and tends to produce very poor quality mats.

    Abstract: An extruder such as a reclaim extruder includes a feed section with a throat into which a force feeder is positioned to compact and feed reclaim material at a higher and more productive rate. The force feeder includes three side-by-side augers pointed at the extruder screw axis. An AC variable frequency drive motor drives a double sided cog belt in serpentine fashion around respective pulleys or sheaves for the augers. Two of the augers are of one hand rotated in one direction, and one of opposite hand rotated in the opposite direction. The pulleys or sheaves are of different size so that each auger rotates progressively faster moving down stream of the extruder screw. Each auger is positioned in a closely fitting compression tube each provided with an inlet opening. The force feeder is conveniently angularly positioned through the wall of a collection box between a hopper and the throat of the extruder.

    Abstract: An extrusion system utilizes single or tandem extruders and a mixer-cooler to extrude a foamable extrudate through a die in a sealable chamber. The foamable extrudate is shaped and calibrated within the chamber. The die is mounted on the end of a gel tube projecting through a gland seal in a fixed bulkhead forming the upstream end of the chamber. The gel tube and mixer-cooler are mounted on a movable carriage, movement of which may be used to adjust the die with respect to shaping and calibrating equipment inside the chamber. The mixer-cooler achieves a selected narrow range of uniform viscosity of the melt at the die depending on the size of the product and density. The chamber is preferably a vacuum chamber producing low density foams. The product exits the chamber to atmosphere on a continuous basis through a submerged orifice in a water baffle immersion seal.

    Abstract: The present invention is a non-woven fiber mat suitable for reinforcing resilient sheet floor coverings, such as vinyl floor coverings. The non-woven fiber mat is in the form of a sheet of reinforcement fibers which at least includes semi-coiled fibers and can also include coiled fiber, with one or more turns, and even some relatively straight or slightly curved fibers. It is desirable for most, if not all, of the reinforcement fibers to be made from glass. However, it may also be desirable for the reinforcement fibers to include glass fibers and synthetic fibers. It may even be possible for the reinforcement fibers to include only non-glass fibers. At least one polymeric binder is used for bonding together the reinforcement fibers so as to make the fiber mat a suitable substrate for reinforcing resilient sheet floor coverings, such as an interlayer for vinyl floor coverings.
