  • Patent number: 5167316
Abstract: A method and apparatus for positioning and indexing molded hollow plastic articles for trimming molded hollow plastic articles having flash and a finish for a closure wherein the articles are supported and moved in succession by a vacuum conveyor which holds the articles in upright position and moves them past successive stations for deflashing, facing, inspection, rejection and unloading. The conveyor is a chain slat conveyor having longitudinally spaced vertical holes that communicate with a vacuum chamber over which the conveyor is trained. The conveyor is driven intermittently and moves the articles in succession past each of the stations. At the load station, the articles are oriented so that they are in proper alignment and relationship to the openings in the conveyor.

  • Patent number: 5082608
Abstract: The method of making polystyrene foam for foam products which includes utilizing atmospheric gases as the blowing agents or preferably mixing one or more of these gases and a blending agent which is non-volatile at the extrusion temperatures, introducing the mixture to a molten thermoplastic polystyrene resin containing nucleating agents such as sodium bicarbonate and citric acid and extruding the thermoplastic in the form of a foam. The resultant foam has substantially no residual blowing agent, is dimensionally stable at ambient temperatures and when used with a non-volatile blending agent can be made with small amounts of blowing agent permitting cooling of the melt without high loading on the extruder. The foam may be coextruded with one or more layers of thermoplastic films so that the resultant product is adpated for use for plates, cups, food containers or packaging and for labells for containers such as glass and plastic containers and for labels that are shrunk in place on a container.

  • Patent number: 5079057
Abstract: A plastic container having a multilayer label applied by in-mold labeling during the blow molding of the plastic container. The label comprises a non-cellular inner layer, an intermediate cellular layer compatible with the inner layer and heat bonded to the inner layer, and an outer non-cellular plastic layer compatible with the intermediate cellular layer and heat bonded thereto. The label is positioned in a mold cavity with the outer layer in contact with the mold. When a hot plastic parison at molding temperature is expanded by fluid pressure against the walls of the mold to form a container, the non-cellular inner layer becomes bonded to the outer surface of the container by heat from the container.

  • Patent number: 5065862
Abstract: A carrier for a container package holding an array of cans each of which has an annular bead on the upper end thereof comprising a sheet of flexible plastic material having a plurality of openings forming an array for receiving the ends of the cans and at least one film of plastic material coextensive with the sheet and bonded to the periphery of the sheet. The sheet is made as a coextruded sheet comprising a first relatively thicker layer and a second relatively thin layer adjacent the film. The second layer has a melting point lower than that of the first layer or the film and facilitates the bonding of the film to the sheet by heat. In a modified form two layers of film are bonded to the sheet.

  • Patent number: 5062568
Abstract: A two-piece nestable cup-like container comprising a continuous side wall having an open upper end and includes a recessed bottom. The side wall is formed from a single double ended sheet of a heat-shrinkable thermoplastic material. The ends of the sheet are joined to one another along a liquid-tight seam. The side wall extends downwardly from a point near the open mouth of the upper end of the container to a point near the bottom and is thereafter folded at its lower edge upwardly to form a double wall portion and a radially inwardly extending annular portion that underlies a separate bottom member that is sealingly joined to the radially inwardly extending portion on the bottom edge of the side wall. In accordance with the method and apparatus, a sleeve made from the sheet by joining the ends is heat shrunk on a mandrel and the free edge at the lower portion of the side wall is caused to shrink inwardly.

  • Patent number: 5060830
Abstract: A dispensing package for dispensing liquid comprising an injection blow molded container having a flexible body and a neck comprising an outer wall and an inner wall. The inner wall defines a dispensing opening. A closure has a transverse wall, a peripheral skirt and a peripheral foot for engaging a flat surface. Interengaging means between the closure and the outer wall hold the transverse wall in sealing engagment with the inner wall of the neck for closing the dispensing opening. The closure is movable axially relative to the container between a first position sealingly engaging the neck of the container and a second position wherein fluid is permitted to flow to an outlet so that when the wall of the container is flexed a portion of the contents is dispensed. In one form, the outlet is in the skirt. In another form, the outlet is in the transverse wall.

  • Patent number: 5044922
Abstract: Apparatus for applying labels in the molds of a plastic blow molding machine of the type wherein a plurality of sets of molds are mounted on a wheel rotatable about a horizontal axis. Mold sections are moved toward and away from one another to enclose a parison, and the parison is then blown to the confines of the cavity between the mold sections. The apparatus removes labels successively from one or more magazines, and deposits labels on an endless conveyor that transports the labels to a position adjacent an open mold. The apparatus laterally transfers the labels successively from the conveyor to a position within the mold section, such that when a mold closes about a plastic parison and the parison is blown, the labels become adhered to the blown plastic article.
