Patent number: 9676689Abstract: A multistage tubular reaction system and method for preparing methylol derivatives of an aldehyde includes a tubular reaction system with a plurality of successive reactor stages comprising a plurality of jacketed reaction tubes provided with a cooling system adapted to control flow of a cooling medium through said jacketed reaction tubes. The cooling medium flow is controlled independently in different stages in response to temperature measurements in the reaction system to regulate temperature. In order to further reduce temperature spikes and byproduct generation, aldehyde is stepwise added to the production stream at a plurality of feed ports proximate to reaction tubes equipped with tube inserts to enhance mixing and heat transfer.Type: GrantFiled: July 23, 2014Date of Patent: June 13, 2017Assignee: OXEA BISHOP LLCInventors: Michael J. Stone, Howard W. Brooks, Heinz Strutz, Donald K. Raff, Guido D. Frey, Norman Nowotny, Marcos L. Schroeder, Fred Gaytan, Tracy Kevin Hunt, William E. Slinkard

Patent number: 9394218Abstract: A multistage tubular reaction system and method for preparing methylol derivatives of an aldehyde includes a tubular reaction system with a plurality of successive reactor stages provided with a formaldehyde containing feed stream. The system includes multiple feed ports for the staged addition of C2 or higher condensible aldehyde and/or base to the formaldehyde containing stream at a plurality of successive feed points to provide a production stream, which is progressively provided with additional reactants as the production stream advances through the successive reaction stages. Advantages include better temperature control and reduced byproduct formation.Type: GrantFiled: July 23, 2014Date of Patent: July 19, 2016Assignee: OXEA BISHOP LLCInventors: Heinz Strutz, Donald K. Raff, Guido D. Frey, Norman Nowotny, Marcos Schroeder, Fred Gaytan, Tracy Kevin Hung, William E. Slinkard

Patent number: 9108911Abstract: A method of making di-TMP includes reacting TMP and a dialkyl carbonate in the presence of a base catalyst in a reaction medium to form an oxetane of TMP in the reaction medium; providing additional TMP and an acid catalyst to the reaction mixture and reacting the oxetane in situ with the additional TMP to produce di-TMP; and recovering di-TMP. The process may be carried out in sequential reaction zones by feeding the reaction medium forward or carried out sequentially in a single reactor. Preferably, one or all of the following conditions are met: (i) said acid catalyst is a strong acid catalyst or (ii) said base catalyst is a strong base catalyst; or (iii) the molar ratio of TMP/dialkyl carbonate employed in the method is greater than 2.5.Type: GrantFiled: November 13, 2014Date of Patent: August 18, 2015Assignee: OXEA BISHOP LLCInventors: A. Patent number: 8921618Abstract: A method of reclaiming trimethylolpropane from purification residue includes hydrolyzing a purification residue with an aqueous medium in the presence of (i) an acid and (ii) an oxidizing agent. The method is particularly effective to reclaim trimethylolpropane from monolinear-bis-TMP-formal: monolinear bis-TMP-formal (MBLF or TMP-BMLF); Formula II: [C2H5C(CH2OH)2CH2O]2CH2??(II).Type: GrantFiled: September 17, 2012Date of Patent: December 30, 2014Assignee: OXEA Bishop LLCInventors: Kenneth A.
