  • Patent number: 5125421
Abstract: An improved tobacco filter or plug wrap is made by calendering ultraporous paper. The calendering process reduces surface irregularities, reduces the thickness of the paper, and reduces the porosity. In general, during the calendering step, the ultraporous paper should be reduced in thickness from about 0.1 mils. to about 2.5 mils.

  • Patent number: 5121759
Abstract: A wrapper for a smoking article which, when wrapped about a tobacco column, provides improved sidestream smoke reduction, improved ash formation, and acceptable mainstream smoke taste and sidestream smoke odor subjectives. These objectives are attained by forming a single cellulosic sheet containing a filler comprising basic magnesium carbonate and, where desired, a co-filler of calcium carbonate. In addition, the sheet may be treated with a burning chemical such as alkali metal salts of organic carboxylic acids, and compatible acids.

  • Patent number: 5108782
Abstract: A silicone release coating emulsion includes a reactive crosslinkable silicone, a catalyst and a high molecular weight, water soluble or water dispersible polymeric thickening agent such as polyethylene oxide. The polymeric thickening agent has a molecular weight greater than about 100,000 g/mole Mw. The silicone release emulsion is applied as a coating to a substrate, and particularly paper, and cured to form a release coating for pressure sensitive adhesives. The silicone emulsion exhibits improved holdout of the silicone from the substrate.

  • Patent number: 5107864
Abstract: A wrapper for a smoking article which, when wrapped about a tobacco column, provides improved sidestream smoke reduction, improved ash formation, and improved mainstream smoke taste and sidestream smoke odor subjectives. These objectives are attained by forming a single cellulosic sheet containing a filler combination of magnesium hydroxide activated carbon, and calcium carbonate. In addition, the sheet may be treated with a burning chemical such as potassium citrate, an organic acid such as citric acid, and a sugar such as sucrose. Considerable latitude exists in regard to sheet basis weight, filler levels, sheet porosity, burn rate and size press solution treatment in order to optimize product requirements.

  • Patent number: 5065777
Abstract: A cigarette paper is disclosed which, when fabricated into a cigarette with a suitable tobacco column, statically burns at an acceptable rate, produces a light-colored, well-formed ash which clings tightly without premature flaking, and delivers both mainstream and sidestream smoke with a subjectively pleasant taste and aroma.

  • Patent number: 4966651
Abstract: An improved paper for printing and other uses can be made from a paper pulp that contains pulp derived from hardwoods if the pulp is refined in a refiner that has at least one abrasive surface disk. The pulp can be refined to give a vessel picks count of 2/cm.sup.2 or less and have a Freeness of less than that which can be achieved using a refiner having conventional barred disks.

  • Patent number: 4915118
Abstract: A smoking article wrapper which when combined with a suitable tobacco column produces up to 75% less particulate sidestream smoke than do prior art cigarette paper wrappers and to methods of producing same. The paper conains freshly precipitated magnesium hydroxide filler precipitated by an equal or near equal stoichiometric addition rate process in the presence of the particulate magnesium hydroxide and/or calcium co-filler(s) and in the absence of the cellulosic pulp fibers.

  • Patent number: 4897159
Abstract: Apparatus and method for automatically detecting and removing contaminant particles from a moving pulp mat are provided, detection of the particles being accomplished using a light source for transmitting light to the pulp mat, a light detecting means for detecting decreases in the intensity of light across the pulp mat corresponding to positions or locations of contaminant particles in the mat, and a control package for generating signals corresponding to the detected positions to be used in the contaminant removal proceses, removal of the particles being accomplished by cutting a rectangular section containing the particle from the mat using a bank of fluid jet nozzles which produce longitudinal slits and transverse cuts in the pulp mat as the mat travels past the nozzle bank.

  • Patent number: 4881557
Abstract: A cigarette paper which when fabricated into a cigarette with a suitable tobacco column produces up to 80% less particulate sidestream smoke than do cigarettes fabricated with conventional cigarette paper wrappers. This reduction of sidestream smoke is accomplished by incorporation of a mixture of freshly precipitated and particulate magnesium hydroxides in the cigarette paper sheet as paper fillers. The high percentage reductions in sidestream particulate smoke are obtained when the median particle size of the particulate magnesium hydroxide filler is relatively large, e.g., 15 micrometers.

  • Patent number: 4804002
Abstract: A tobacco product wrapper containing a glycoside comprising an acetyl of a carbohydrate and an aromatic agent or a derivative thereof. The glycoside flavors or masks the side stream smoke while substantially not altering the taste or flavor characteristics of the tobacco or mainstream smoke.
