The drilling machine comprises a first gear having a first axis of rotation, and a cam follower surface. It has a second gear having a second axis of rotation coincident with the first axis of rotation. A housing is provided configured to support the first gear and the second gear, the housing having an undulating cam plate surface, a spring and a tool holder spindle having a third axis of rotation. The first and second gears are configured to impart both a linear feed and a rotation to the spindle. The first and second axes of rotation are coincident with the third axis of rotation such that the cam surface is urged into contact with the cam follower surface by the spring. Patent number: 5143161Abstract: A positive feed spindle with automatic retraction for driving a thread cutting tool is provided by using a fixed feed nut threaded on the spindle. A motor drives the spindle through a gear train that includes a first coupling gear with upper side teeth for engaging lower side teeth of a second coupling gear that also has upper side teeth engaging lower side teeth of a third coupling gear. The first and third coupling gears are continually driven by the motor in opposite directions through radial teeth of each. The second coupling gear on the same shaft as the first and third coupling gear is automatically raised when the spindle has been driven a predetermined extent by raising the shaft to disengage from the first and engage the third to reverse direction of the spindle. Radial teeth of the second coupling gear remain meshed with teeth of an idle gear in the drive train.Type: GrantFiled: September 20, 1991Date of Patent: September 1, 1992Assignee: P.V. Patent number: 5022800Abstract: A positive feed drill having a spindle drive gear train and a spindle feed gear train coupled to the drive gear train is provided with means for uncoupling the feed coupling gear from the drive coupling gear, and locking the feed coupling gear when the spindle has been fed a predetermined extent, thereby placing the drill in retract mode, and for unlocking the feed coupling gear, once the spindle is retracted, without recoupling it to the drive gear train, thereby placing the feed gear train in an idle mode until the aforesaid uncoupling means is manually reset. The drill is further provided with a rapid advance coupling gear keyed to drive a shaft which turns the drive coupling gear and with a rapid advance idle gear meshed with the rapid advance coupling gear. The gear ratio of the rapid advance coupling gear to the rapid advance idle gear is selected to be greater than the gear ratio of the feed coupling gear to the normal idle feed gear.Type: GrantFiled: July 9, 1990Date of Patent: June 11, 1991Assignee: P.V. Patent number: 4668134Abstract: A turret coupling (13) for locking a tool (10) in a desired angular position relative to a workpiece (16), where the tool is locked onto the workpiece by a fixture (19) through a nose piece (12), is comprised of a sleeve (13a) notched on the rim. The sleeve is closely fitted over the lower end of the tool, or a nose adapter (25), and held by a retainer (13b) threaded into the tool or the adapter. A latch key (24) locks the tool to the sleeve. To reposition the tool relative to the nose piece, a shaft (28) is lifted by a lever (26) having a return spring (22) under a button (21).Type: GrantFiled: January 13, 1986Date of Patent: May 26, 1987Assignee: P. Patent number: 4612998Abstract: A positive feed drill having a spindle drive gear train and a spindle feed gear train coupled to the drive gear train by side teeth on coupling gears mounted on the same shaft is provided with actuatable means for uncoupling the feed coupling gear from the drive coupling gear, and locking it when the spindle has been fed a predetermined extent, thereby retracting the spindle, and for unlocking the feed gear train, once the spindle is retracted, without recoupling it to the drive gear train, thereby holding the feed gear train in an idle mode until the automatic means is manually reset.Type: GrantFiled: July 12, 1984Date of Patent: September 23, 1986Assignee: P. Patent number: 4538942Abstract: A positive feed drill having a spindle drive gear train and a spindle feed gear train, coupled to the drive gear train by side teeth on respective drive and feed coupling gears mounted on a common shaft, is provided with a spring between the feed coupling gear and a housing to bias the feed coupling gear against the drive coupling gear to feed the spindle forward as it drills. A positive stop prevents the spindle from feeding beyond a predetermined point, thus causing the feed coupling gear to be driven by the spindle. A slope on the faces of the side teeth engaging the drive and coupling gears in order to allow the feed coupling gear to ratchet over the drive coupling gear when the spindle feed reaches the positive stop.Type: GrantFiled: June 13, 1984Date of Patent: September 3, 1985Assignee: P.V. Patent number: 4418767Abstract: In a positive feed power drill having a spindle drive gear train and a spindle feed gear train, and having hydraulic (air) means for actuating a piston to disengage the feed gear train for automatic retraction of the spindle, provision is made for field alteration of a valve in the hydraulic system, and associated actuating mechanism, to automatically reverse the positive feed when the spindle has been driven either (1) a predetermined extent set by a nut on the spindle which engages an arm over a valve stem and pushes the valve stem to a reversing position or (2) to a predetermined stop when countersinking, at which time the spindle stops advancing, thereby causing the spindle feed gear to have a tendency to move upwardly in the spindle actuator housing.Type: GrantFiled: March 17, 1981Date of Patent: December 6, 1983Assignee: P.
