Publication number: 20100122620Abstract: A circular saw blade includes a ceramic coating applied to opposing major surfaces in an outer margin of the circular saw blade where cutting teeth of the saw blade are arranged in spaced-apart relation and separated by blade tooth gullets. The ceramic coating inhibits abrupt increases in temperature of the outer margin during cutting operation to thereby inhibit the cutting teeth from deviating laterally. Methods of making saw blades include applying a ceramic coating to the outer margin using a plasma spray process or another coating process.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 18, 2009Publication date: May 20, 2010Applicant: Pacific Saw and Knife Company LLCInventors: James P. Ruthven, David S. Macey

Patent number: 5799558Abstract: An arbor is formed with uniformly-spaced splines each of which has a cross-section in the shape of an asymmetric trapezoid. The leading force transmitting face of each of the splines is disposed at an angle lagging by about seven degrees from a truly radially-extending plane of the arbor. The trailing face of each of the splines is disposed other than in a generally radially-extending plane of the arbor. A circular saw blade mounted on the arbor has a central opening or eye formed with complementarily shaped recesses such that the arbor splines fit within the recesses in the eye for transmission of torque from arbor to saw.Type: GrantFiled: July 23, 1997Date of Patent: September 1, 1998Assignees: Pacific Saw and Knife Company, Precision Tool & Die Corporation Of Shreveport, Inc.Inventors: Keith H. Hewitt, Douglas Darrell Miller, Steve Bryant Wilson

Patent number: 5752307Abstract: A replaceable bit for a circular saw is provided with a cutting portion of hard metal alloy by machining off the original cutting portion, supporting the remaining base metal portion such that a predetermined selected part extends into a chill mold, melting the surface of the selected part using a plasma arc welding torch, feeding a rod of the hard alloy into the plasma jet of the torch such that melted material from the rod drips into the mold cavity to fill it, the melted alloy mixing with the melted surface of the selected part of the remaining base metal portion in a transition zone, allowing the melted mass of hard alloy to cool and harden into a dome shape in the mold cavity, removing the bit from the mold cavity, and grinding the flank, face and back regions of the new cutting portion to selected final dimensions. Apparatus suitable for performing the process is disclosed.Type: GrantFiled: September 17, 1996Date of Patent: May 19, 1998Assignee: Pacific Saw and Knife CompanyInventor: Keith H. Hewitt

Patent number: 5439039Abstract: A log-slabbing chipper with multiple knife structures distributed about the periphery of a power-driven rotor head. Each knife structure includes a holder and a pair of assemblies mounting double-edge replaceable knives. Each knife is mounted between a clamp and a fixed counterknife. Each knife has a serrated back-bearing surface and each clamp has a correspondingly serrated clamping surface. Adjusting screws exert pressure on the clamps to slide the clamps and the knives with respect to the stationary counterknives to achieve desired precise edge positions.Type: GrantFiled: August 30, 1994Date of Patent: August 8, 1995Assignee: Pacific Saw and Knife CompanyInventors: Joseph R. Bradstreet, Jr., Keith H. Hewitt, David S. Macey

Patent number: 4776251Abstract: A circular saw blade is disclosed which includes a circular body having two side faces, a central bore, and a toothed peripheral edge. Disposed within the body of the saw blade is a plurality of circumferentially extending laser-cut slots. Each of the slots consists of an arc of a circle concentric with the body of the saw blade and parallel to the peripheral edge thereof. The slots extend through the body from one side face to the other, and are spaced in a manner such that each slot cools an area of the body when the saw blade is in operation.Type: GrantFiled: June 12, 1987Date of Patent: October 11, 1988Assignee: Pacific Saw and Knife CompanyInventor: Linwood I. Carter, Jr.

Patent number: 4124157Abstract: A tipping fixture for circular saw blades in which a tip supporter and a saw supporter are mounted for relative adjustment toward and away from one another, and for relative vertical adjustment to facilitate brazing a tip to a tooth held in a stable position on the saw support.Type: GrantFiled: June 13, 1977Date of Patent: November 7, 1978Assignee: Pacific Saw & Knife CompanyInventor: Robert L. Walker

Patent number: 4123958Abstract: A circular saw blade having a plurality of spaced teeth around its periphery and having plural slots extending inwardly from the periphery generally toward the center, the slots being spaced on the cutting side with a series of spacing elements individually secured to lands provided by notches or recesses which provide the lands.Type: GrantFiled: October 12, 1977Date of Patent: November 7, 1978Assignee: Pacific Saw & Knife CompanyInventors: John H. Wright, George H. Jacobsen

Patent number: 3989076Abstract: One pulp chip forming crosscut saw includes a saw chain including a U-shaped combined side slitter and raker tooth and a depth gauge carrying a center slitter tooth extending above the side slitter and raker tooth so that the center slitter tooth slits the center of the bottom of the kerf and then the side slitter and raker tooth cuts two rows of pulp chips. A second pulp chip forming crosscut saw includes a carrier member supporting a U-shaped tooth having side slitting side plates and a raker top plate which carries on the top thereof a center slitter. Another pulp chip forming crosscut saw includes a solid block, sloping faced raker having a center slitter on the top thereof and mounted by an undercut interlock on a carrier. Another pulp chip forming crosscut saw includes a solid block, a sloping faced raker carrying a center slitter on its top and a pair of side slitters at the sides of the block.Type: GrantFiled: February 18, 1975Date of Patent: November 2, 1976Assignee: Pacific Saw and Knife CompanyInventor: James H.
