Patent number: 9199763Abstract: This invention relates to a can end (1) providing improved tab access for a consumer. A further aspect of the present invention relates to a container incorporating such a can end (1). The can end (1) includes a moveable portion (30) located beneath all or part of the handle (20b) of the can end, with the moveable portion deformable from an ‘up’ position (30a) to a ‘down’ position (30b) to provide increased tab access for a consumer. The can end (1) is provided with one or more downwardly inclined annular steps (31), which has been found to greatly increase the force required to deform the panel from the ‘down’ to the ‘up’ position, therefore resulting in a far greater likelihood of the consumer receiving a container (40) incorporating the can end (1) with the moveable portion (30) in the ‘down’ position (30b), thereby facilitating tab access.Type: GrantFiled: January 13, 2009Date of Patent: December 1, 2015Assignee: Crown Packaging Technology, Inc.Inventors: Paul Robert Dunwoody, Laure Helene Marie Paillet

Publication number: 20150321789Abstract: A metal container body 1 comprises a base and a generally cylindrical side wall 3. The top edge of the cylindrical side wall is rolled over to form a hollow annular bead 5 surrounding the upper open end of the container body and a notch 6 is formed at a circumferential point in the annular bead. The container body is for use with a releasable closure 2 formed with an end wall 7 and a depending skirt 8 and having an annular layer of sealing material 9 provided on the inside of the end wall adjacent the skirt. When the closure is pressed onto the container body, the annular bead engages the annular layer of sealing material and some of that material extends into the notch 6. The closure is held on the container only by the partial vacuum formed therein during processing of a food product in the container. After processing, the user opens the container by rotating the closure. Sealing material in the notch forces the closure to lift off from the container to break the seal and release the closure.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 3, 2013Publication date: November 12, 2015Applicant: Crown Packaging Technology, Inc.Inventors: Laura Jane McGirr, Tristan Robert Ellison, Christopher Paul Ramsey

Patent number: 9162795Abstract: A container lid includes a conventional main or pour opening and a vent opening spaced from the main opening. A vent score defines the shape of the vent opening, and a vent panel covers the vent opening. The vent panel has a raised convex shape. The lower surface of the tab handle includes a protruding portion, seen as a concave shaped element when viewed from above the container lid. The protruding portion of the tab handle can be aligned with the vent panel so application of a downward force on the tab handle transfers force to the vent panel and breaks the vent score. The shapes of the vent panel and concave element of the tab handle can be adjusted for selective and controlled force transfer to create the vent opening.Type: GrantFiled: February 12, 2014Date of Patent: October 20, 2015Assignee: Crown Packaging Technology, Inc.Inventors: Daniel Alan Thiemann, Ray Alan Toms

Patent number: 9085026Abstract: A seaming assembly configured to seam a can end onto a can body to form a seamed container is disclosed. The seaming assembly includes a lifter assembly, a seaming chuck, and a knockout pad. The lifter assembly may be configured to lift a can body, and may include a spring. The seaming chuck may include a surface that is configured to contact a portion of the can end during seaming. The knockout pad may be movable relative to the seaming chuck, and may be configured to locate the can end prior to seaming. The spring may be preloaded to provide a force between 30 lbf and 90 lbf to the can body when the lifter assembly has lifted the can body and the can end has contacted the seaming chuck. The force provided to the can body may increase to between 90 lbf and 150 lbf after the spring has been compressed.Type: GrantFiled: June 10, 2011Date of Patent: July 21, 2015Assignee: Crown Packaging Technology, Inc.Inventors: Carlos Andrés Mejia-Quinchia, Brian Fields

Patent number: 9079238Abstract: A closed loop coolant system which ensures the isolation of coolant fluid within an apparatus for producing a metal container by wall ironing. The apparatus includes a die toolpack which reduces the thickness of the container side wall, a ram (5) and a ram guidance assembly (10) which guides the ram along a bore of a tubular assembly. The tubular assembly has a fluid inlet, and the surface of the bore of the tubular assembly has grooves (13) for passage of coolant fluid between the bore and around the outside of the ram (5) and seals for minimizing leakage of oil into the coolant. Coolant is directed back to a tank (20) via a heat exchanger (21) and any oil is skimmer off the coolant by an oil skimmer (24). This oil can then be filtered, cleaned and recycled, or disposed of.Type: GrantFiled: December 1, 2009Date of Patent: July 14, 2015Assignee: Crown Packaging Technology, Inc.Inventor: John Andrew Crabtree
