Patent number: 8442697Abstract: Embodiments of a method and an apparatus for on-demand power management of a processing system have been presented. In some embodiments, the apparatus includes a power management unit (PMU) to provide power to an electronic system. The apparatus further includes a power management controller (PMC) coupled to the power management unit, to control values of one or more parameters of an operating state of the PMU in response to the operating conditions of the electronic system. The PMC may execute a power management algorithm (PMA) to determine the values of the parameters. Further, the PMU and the PMC may reside on different integrated circuit substrates.Type: GrantFiled: March 28, 2008Date of Patent: May 14, 2013Assignee: Packet DigitalInventors: Michael J. Schmitz, Brian M. Morlock, Joel A. Jorgenson

Patent number: 8312299Abstract: An apparatus for on-demand power management includes an I/O serial communication master device, peripheral devices that communicate with the master device along the serial bus, and a power manager that buffers the peripheral devices from the serial communication master. The power manager also manages voltage regulation and clock sources to the peripheral devices, with the ability of placing the peripheral devices in an inactive state, or in any number of active states as a means to conserve energy. In some embodiments, the I/O serial communications master acts as if the peripheral devices are always in the highest activity state, and the power manager manages the communications to and from the peripheral devices and the power management of the peripheral devices to minimize energy consumption and reduce system latency.Type: GrantFiled: March 26, 2009Date of Patent: November 13, 2012Assignee: Packet DigitalInventors: Christopher J. Tremel, Brian M. Morlock, Michael J. Schmitz

Patent number: 8095818Abstract: An apparatus for on-demand power management including a system controller, a clock domain manager coupled to the system controller and a power distribution manager coupled to the system controller. The system controller monitors a processing demand in a processing system. The clock domain manager provides one or more clock frequencies and, in response to the processing demand, switches between a first set of clock frequencies and a second set of clock frequencies without halting the processing system. The power distribution manager provides one or more operating voltages and, in response to the processing demand, switches between a first set of voltages and a second set of voltages without halting the processing system.Type: GrantFiled: May 23, 2008Date of Patent: January 10, 2012Assignee: Packet DigitalInventors: Joel A. Jorgenson, Divyata Kakumanu, Brian M. Morlock

Patent number: 7730334Abstract: A method for on-demand power management monitors a processing demand in a processing system operating at a first set of voltages and frequencies and generates a second set of voltages and frequencies in response to the processing demand. The method switches from the first set of voltages and frequencies to the second set of voltages and frequencies without halting the processing system.Type: GrantFiled: December 20, 2007Date of Patent: June 1, 2010Assignee: Packet DigitalInventors: Joel A. Patent number: 7657764Abstract: Embodiments of on-demand power management have been presented. In some embodiments, a set of processing events on a system bus within a processing system is detected. Further, a processing event pattern may be recognized, and the processing event pattern may be correlated with a processing demand in the processing system.Type: GrantFiled: December 20, 2007Date of Patent: February 2, 2010Assignee: Packet DigitalInventors: Joel A. Patent number: 7312646Abstract: An apparatus for controlling switching transients including a bus interface unit and a waveform shaper coupled to the bus interface unit and a peripheral device. The bus interface unit generates a number of control signals defining the beginning and end of an operation, where each control signal includes a transition from a first value to a second value over a period of time. The bus interface unit selects a critical control signal defined as the last control signal to start the operation and/or the first control signal to end the operation. The waveform shaper receives the selected control signal and modifies the control signal by increasing the period of time of the transition. The modified control signal is received by the peripheral device and a switching transient in the peripheral device is controlled.Type: GrantFiled: May 13, 2005Date of Patent: December 25, 2007Assignee: Packet DigitalInventors: Joel A. Jorgenson, Bradley R. Thurow, Brian M. Morlock
