  • Patent number: 6240639
Abstract: A fluid metering roll such as an anilox roll is comprised of a tubular carbon fiber composition core having one or more metallic layers intervening between the core and a surface layer comprised of ceramic, the ceramic having outwardly opening fluid metering cells. The method of forming the roll includes steps of thermal spray applying one or more layers comprised of metal over the roll surface the layers intervening between the roll and an external ceramic coating. Characterizing features of the application method reside in each of the thermal spray applied layers being directed toward the core at a negative rake angle of from about 11½ to about 13½ and preferably 12½°, the core and layers which receive the thermal spray being simultaneously cooled to about 110° Centigrade or less during application of the thermal spray.

  • Patent number: 5235851
Abstract: A device and method for obtaining a direct reading of the cell volume of the cells of an anilox roller is disclosed. The device includes a transparent strip to be applied against the surface of an anilox roll to be measured, the undersurface of the strip including a seal area surrounding an elongate channel. Fluid is introduced into the channel and is spread along the surface of the roll by forcing the portions of the strip defining the upper surface of the channel against the roll surface to fill the cells in registry with the channel. A reading is obtained in accordance with the length of the channel which is filled by the fluid. Index markings may be provided on the strip to permit a direct readout of cell volume.

  • Patent number: 4819558
Abstract: A fluid metering roll is embossed with chains of cells, the cells of each chain being interconnected by channels. Certain of the walls of the cells are aligned at critical angles relative to the axis of the roll. The channels are oriented and arranged to assure a flushing of all portions of the cells so as to eliminate ink encrustation and maximize ink spread to avoid striations and moire effects.

  • Patent number: 4402888
Abstract: The present invention relates to improvements in treatment rolls for the corona discharge treatment of polymeric films whereby the same are rendered receptive to printing inks and the like. More particularly, the invention is directed to a treatment roll and method for use as an electrode in a corona discharge device, the roll being comprised of a metal substrate having a porous ceramic coating, the interstices in said coating being filled with silicone polymer, the roll evincing a high resistance to wear and electrical breakdown, whereby higher volumes of material may be processed.

  • Patent number: 4301730
Abstract: The present invention is directed to an improved anilox roll for metering inks or like fluids and to the method of making the same. In accordance with the invention, a cylindrical metal roll is provided with a multiplicity of indented receiver cells in its periphery, the cells being of a selected configuration calculated to optimize the distribution of fluid therefrom, and may be of concentrations up to about 550 cells per linear inch in each direction. A ceramic coating is applied over the surface of the roll by plasma flame spray or other thermal coating techniques, known per se, the coating being formed from oxide particles having an average size of about 5 microns or less, the coating being maintained at a thickness in the order of about 0.0015" or less. The configuration of the underlying cells is, as a result of such practice, substantially maintained and the volumetric capacity of the cells defined in the coating is at least about 60% or more of the original cell volume.

  • Patent number: 4009658
Abstract: The present invention is directed to a novel metering roll for inks or the like and to the method of making the same. In accordance with the invention, a cylindrical metallic roller core is provided with a multiplicity of shaped indentations or receiver cells in its periphery, in concentration of from about 35 to 90 cells per lineal inch in each direction, the cells being preferably generally in the form of inverted pyramids of a selected volumetric capacity, the receiver cells being preferably closely spaced and separated by land areas of minimal size of the order of 30 microns or less.
