Abstract: A process is disclosed for the manufacture of quinolinic acid by oxidizing quinoline with ruthenium tetraoxide in the presence of hypochlorite solution in which a certain amount of base is added prior to the inception of the oxidation reaction. The disclosed process provides greatly improved yields of high purity quinolinic acid.
Abstract: An apparatus and process for foam wrapping pressure sensitive rolls of material in a limited amount of space with a minimum amount of handling of the pressure sensitive rolls. The apparatus includes an intermediate transfer cart and a retractable foam application unit. The intermediate transfer cart operates to receive unwrapped rolls of pressure sensitive material from a winder unit and transport it to a position underneath the foam application unit which custom wraps various widths of pressure sensitive rolls of material from one full width of foam web while providing a driving force to turn the pressure sensitive rolls as foam is being applied thereto.
Abstract: A threading belt (A) extends around a plurality of pulleys and guide rollers (B). A loading station (C) is disposed along a linear run of the threading belt for inserting a web between hingedly connected gripping portions (16, 18) of the threading belt. The loading station includes a wedge-shaped belt spreading member (52) for urging the gripping portions of the belt apart and providing a groove (60) through which the web is fed between the gripping portions. The threading belt conveys the web through a floating dryer (D) to an unloading station (E). The unloading station includes an ejector member (90) which spreads the belt and a nozzle (96) for directing a jet of air between the belt gripping portions to eject the web therefrom. The belt includes a main woven fabric strength member (24) extending along the hinged connection of the gripping portions. A fabric cover (20) surrounds the gripping and hinge portions and is impregnated with a silicon rubber (22).
Abstract: A thermally-sensitive color-forming composition is disclosed which comprises chromogenic material and certain acidic developer material. Record material comprising this color-forming composition exhibits greatly improved background coloration.
Abstract: Disclosed is a pressure-sensitive record unit which comprises a top sheet having coated on the underside thereof solid color former material and a bottom sheet having coated on the upper side thereof a coating comprising solid color developer material and microcapsules containing a liquid solvent for the color former. Such a record unit makes possible the unexpectedly efficient utilization of the color former material. It furthermore permits the printing application of some of the components, resulting in even more efficient utilization of color former material and elimination of undesirable side effects of printed record units taught in the prior art.
Abstract: A process is disclosed for performing encapsulation, en masse, by an in situ polymerization reaction to yield capsule wall material. The reaction comprises the polymerization of urea and formaldehyde, or monomeric or low molecular weight polymers of dimethylol urea or methylated dimethylol urea, melamine and formaldehyde, monomeric or low molecular weight polymers of methylol melamine or methylated melamine, in an aqueous vehicle and the reaction is conducted in the presence of certain acrylic acid copolymers. The disclosed encapsulation process provides improved resistance of the emulsion of intended capsule core material to destabilization and permits the manufacture of microcapsules with improved drop size distribution, improved resistance to frictional smudge damage and enhanced impermeability.
Abstract: A record member comprising a developer composition comprising a zinc-modified addition product of a phenol and a diolefinic alkylated or alkenylated cyclic hydrocarbon is disclosed. These addition products are particularly useful as color developers for basic chromogenic material.
Abstract: Apparatus for separating two rolls of paper which are interconnected end-to-end, is characterized by a pair of arms pivotally connected at their upper ends and carrying inwardly facing wedges at their lower ends. The arms are advantageously mounted on wheels to facilitate transport of the same, and a hydraulic cylinder extends between the arms intermediate the pivotal connection and wedges. To separate two interconnected paper rolls lying on a floor, the apparatus is positioned to straddle the rolls with inner edges of the wedges aligned on opposite sides of the rolls with the juncture therebetween, whereupon the hydraulic cylinder is actuated to pull the arms together and move the wedges into the juncture to forcefully separate the rolls one from the other.
Abstract: An apparatus and process are disclosed for an efficient decurling system wherein a web material is introduced into a steam environment such that the distance between the web and the steam source is maintained substantially constant.
Abstract: Disclosed is a pressure-sensitive recording material which comprises a support having thereon a two-layer microcapsule coating wherein the microcapsule layer adjacent to the support contains no color former. Such recording material makes possible a substantial decrease in quantity of color former required.

Abstract: Apparatus for separating folded two-on cartons is characterized by a carton supply station for advancing cartons seriatim to a separating station. At the separating station, opposite edges of each carton are gripped and first moved away from each other to pull the two-on carton apart into two separate cartons, and then moved toward each other to bring the separated cartons back together. The separated cartons are then conveyed out of the separating station while the supply station simultaneously advances the next successive two-on carton to the separating station.
Abstract: A thermally-sensitive color-forming composition is disclosed which comprises chromogenic material and certain acidic developer material. Record material comprising this color-forming composition exhibits improved color-forming efficiency and/or image density.
Abstract: In a method of rendering subject matter which is printed on one surface of a computer paper sheet unintelligible, an alpha-numeric interference pattern is printed over substantially the entire printing area of the surface of the sheet carrying the printed subject matter, the density of the interference pattern being sufficient to render the printed subject matter unintelligible. One particular use of the method is in the overprinting of computer print-out paper having printed information on one surface, so that the paper may be reused by printing on its opposite surface without permitting access to the information on the first-printed surface. A machine is disclosed for this application of the method.
