Patent number: 9123461Abstract: A tape wound inductor core device, inductors including same and methods of manufacture. Tape wound material may be cut and/or shaped into “pucks” that have an exterior surface made up of or defined substantially by the edge surfaces of the layers of the constituent conductive material, with all or most of the broad surfaces disposed inwardly, thereby reducing eddy currents and associated losses. Various puck configurations, inductor arrangements and fabrication techniques are disclosed.Type: GrantFiled: April 3, 2012Date of Patent: September 1, 2015Assignee: Peregrine Power, LLCInventor: Bruce W. Patent number: 8649195Abstract: Systems and methods for controlling a modular three-phase converter including two or more interleaved, parallel connected Voltage Source Converters (VSCs) utilizing a hybrid Space Vector Pulse Width Modulation (SVM) control scheme are provided. For the hybrid SVM control scheme, six active vectors utilized for SVM define six sectors in a space vector plane. Each sector is divided into two or more regions having corresponding optimal SVM switching sequences. In operation, a revolving reference voltage vector is sampled to provide a reference voltage vector. The SVM controller then identifies one of the regions in one of the sectors that corresponds to an angle and, in some embodiments, a magnitude of the revolving reference voltage vector and applies the corresponding optimal SVM switching sequence to the two or more interleaved, parallel connected VSCs.Type: GrantFiled: April 7, 2011Date of Patent: February 11, 2014Assignees: Arizona Board of Regents for and on Behalf of Arizona State University, Peregrine Power LLCInventors: Xiaolin Mao, Rajapandian Ayyanar, Amit Kumar Jain

Patent number: 8466766Abstract: An inductor core device, and method of forming same, that has at least a first inductor core section and typically has a second inductor core section, both formed of stacked layers of conductive material. The second core section may be positioned relative to the first core section to define an air gap therebetween and the sections are preferably profiled between their respective end faces and broad surfaces to reduce the eddy current losses induced in the core section(s) near the air gap. Various embodiments, “profile” shaping configurations, and core section arrangements are disclosed.Type: GrantFiled: February 18, 2010Date of Patent: June 18, 2013Assignee: Peregrine Power, LLCInventor: Bruce W. Publication number: 20110249472Abstract: A Dual Active Bridge (DAB) converter and a Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) scheme for controlling the DAB converter are disclosed. In general, the DAB converter includes a transformer, a first H-bridge that is connected to a primary winding of the transformer and controlled via first control signals, and a second H-bridge that is connected to a secondary winding of the transformer and controlled via second control signals. A controller provides the first and second control signals based on an input-to-output voltage ratio and load of the DAB converter such that, in addition to phase shift control, PWM control is simultaneously applied to both the first H-bridge and the second H-bridge when the DAB converter operates at low power and PWM control is applied to only one of the first H-bridge and the second H-bridge when the DAB converter operates above low power.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 1, 2011Publication date: October 13, 2011Applicants: Peregrine Power LLC, Arizona Board of Regents for and on behalf of Arizona State UniversityInventors: Amit Kumar Jain, Rajapandian Ayyanar
