  • Patent number: 6955750
Abstract: The invention relates to an electrochemical gas sensor having both a reference sensor and an active sensor, whereby each reference and active sensor includes a substrate, a counter electrode deposited on a surface of the substrate, a sensing electrode also deposited on the surface, and an electrolytic material in electrical contact with both electrodes for carrying a flow of ions between them, which measures a concentration of a gas and compensates for relative humidity differences between sample gas and surrounding atmosphere. The sensor also includes a layer of electrolytic material on the sensing electrode of the reference sensor and a film of electrolytic material on the sensing electrode of the active sensor, whereby the layer is thicker than the film. The invention may further include a reference electrode in both the reference and active sensors for improving sensor accuracy and/or repeatability.

  • Patent number: 6645773
Abstract: A method of measuring the effective temperature inside a sealed container having a headspace is provided. A liquid solvent is added to the container, and a solid compound is added to the liquid solvent to create a saturated solution. Vapor of the saturated solution is allowed to equilibrate in the headspace of the sealed container, and a volume thereof is transferred to a chromatographic column, where chromatographic readings of the equilibrated vapor are taken. A temperature within the sealed container is then calculated based upon the chromatographic readings of the equilibrated vapor, wherein the temperature calculation is based upon the concentrations of the liquid solvent and the solid compound in the equilibrated vapor.

  • Patent number: 6497509
Abstract: A method of measuring the absolute value of thermal conductivity of low thermal conducting solid materials is disclosed. Thermal conductivity and heat capacity of the sample are determined simultaneously in a single measurement with the prerequisite that these values are frequency independent. This method is realized on power-compensated differential scanning calorimeters without any modification in the measuring system. DSC is calibrated in a standard way for temperature and heat flow. The method uses temperature-time profiles consisting of one fast temperature jump of 0.5 to 2 K and an isotherm. The measuring time for each temperature is less than 1 min. As input parameters only sample thickness and contact area with the DSC furnace (or sample diameter if the sample is disk shaped) are needed together with sample mass. In addition to the sample thermal conductivity and heat capacity the effective thermal contact between sample and DSC furnace is determined.

  • Patent number: 6430513
Abstract: Constituents such as oxy- and deoxy-hemoglobin are monitored non-invasively in an animal organ such as a brain with a spectrometric instrument by passing radiation through the organ. Concentrations are computed from the spectral intensities and from a statistical correlation model. To predetermine the correlation model, the procedures are effected for a plurality of organs of a same type with each organ having established concentrations of the selected constituents, and the correlation model is statistically determined from the concentrations and corresponding intensities. For more accuracy computations are normalized to path length which may be determined by utilizing several discrete wavelengths with RF modulations.
