Abstract: An absorbent composition is disclosed which is particularly useful as an improved animal or pet litter composition, or as an absorbent for aqueous systems or oleophilic materials such as petroleum or vegetable oils and the like. Also disclosed is a method of making the improved absorbent composition and litter composition containing the same. The absorbent compositions include a nitrogen compound absorber such as cyclodextrin or other agents which form a matrix system or complex similar to cyclodextrin. Such other agents include polymerized cyclodextrin and cyclodextrin derivatives and polycarboxylic acid polymers such as acrylate polymers.
