Patent number: 8111839Abstract: A system that records audio and stores the recording is provided. The system includes first and second monitoring assemblies mounted in an earpiece that occludes and forms an acoustic seal of an ear canal. The first monitoring assembly includes an ambient sound microphone (ASM) to monitor an ambient acoustic field and produce an ASM signal. The second monitoring assembly includes an ear canal microphone (ECM) to monitor an acoustic field within the ear canal and produce an ECM signal. The system also includes a data storage device configured to act as a circular buffer for continually storing at least one of the ECM signal or the ASM signal, a further data storage device and a record-activation system. The record-activation system activates the further data storage device to record a content of the data storage device.Type: GrantFiled: April 9, 2008Date of Patent: February 7, 2012Assignee: Personics Holdings Inc.Inventors: Steven Wayne Goldstein, John Usher

Patent number: 8081780Abstract: An earpiece (100) and a method (640) for acoustic management of multiple microphones is provided. The method can include capturing an ambient acoustic signal from an Ambient Sound Microphone (ASM) to produce an electronic ambient signal, capturing in an ear canal an internal sound from an Ear Canal Microphone (ECM) to produce an electronic internal signal, measuring a background noise signal, and mixing the electronic ambient signal with the electronic internal signal in a ratio dependent on the background noise signal to produce a mixed signal. The mixing can adjust an internal gain of the electronic internal signal and an external gain of the electronic ambient signal based on the background noise characteristics. The mixing can account for an acoustic attenuation level and an audio content level of the earpiece. Other embodiments are provided.Type: GrantFiled: May 5, 2008Date of Patent: December 20, 2011Assignee: Personics Holdings Inc.Inventors: Steven Wayne Goldstein, John Usher, Marc Andre Boillot, Jason McIntosh

Publication number: 20110235843Abstract: At least one exemplary embodiment is directed to a system configured to occlude an ear canal. The system comprises a support structure, an expandable device, a housing, a resilient reservoir, and a threaded device. Resilient reservoir resides within housing and is filled with a medium. The threaded device couples to a threaded region of support structure. Threaded device fits in an opening of housing. Rotating threaded device reduces an interior volume of housing thereby transferring the medium from resilient reservoir to expandable device. Threaded device is rotated to displace sufficient medium within resilient reservoir to expand expandable device to occlude the ear canal. Resilient reservoir is passively filled when expandable device is in an un-expanded state.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 24, 2010Publication date: September 29, 2011Applicant: PERSONICS HOLDINGS INC.Inventors: John P. Patent number: 8018328Abstract: Methods and systems are provided which generate an alarm signal that alerts individuals who may be in the vicinity of a reversing vehicle and that alerts a vehicle operator when the alarm signal is not audible due to high ambient sound levels or detritus covering the alarm transducer. A background noise level in proximity to the vehicle is monitored. A level of the alarm signal is increased as the ambient (or background) sound level rises. Conversely, the level of the alarm signal is reduced as the background noise level decreases. The alarm signal is changed in volume, frequency, or both based on a velocity of the vehicle. A frequency content of the alarm signal may be modified if a spectral profile of an ambient sound field contains spectral components that may mask the alarm signal.Type: GrantFiled: September 11, 2008Date of Patent: September 13, 2011Assignee: Personics Holdings Inc.Inventors: Steven Goldstein, John Usher

Publication number: 20100142715Abstract: At least one exemplary embodiment is directed to a website configured to collect sound signatures from around the world and beyond. A communication device automatically stores acoustic information received by a microphone of the communication device. The acoustic information is analyzed for a trigger event. The trigger event stores the acoustic information, attaches metadata, creates a Gaussian Mixture Model, and measures sound pressure level. The communication device automatically sends the sound signature to a database when a communication path is opened to communication device. Each sound signature has associated metadata including a time stamp and geocode. Automatically collecting sounds using a communication device adapted for the process enables a database that captures sounds globally on a continuous basis.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 15, 2009Publication date: June 10, 2010Applicant: PERSONICS HOLDINGS INC.Inventors: Steven Goldstein, John P.
