Abstract: The invention related to a modulator for a communications system. The modulator comprises a spread spectrum coder, a pulse code modulator having a signal input port connectable to a signal output port of the spread spectrum coder. The modulator performs a robust and error free modulation and coding scheme by using a modified spread spectrum scheme combined with pulse code modulation. The communication system contains a low data rate, noise robust modulation and coding scheme using a very simple transmitter. This results in a very straightforward transmitter circuit, reducing size and costs of the transmitter.

Abstract: In the invention, e-book information is distributed on un-cartridged small media that can be made cheaply enough for use in free distribution of information. The e-book information is encoded and stored on a read-only optical disc that is 2 to 4 cm in diameter and 0.6 to 1.2 mm thick, the information being encoded with sufficient redundancy and sufficient tolerance for missing information that the disc can be conveniently handled and pocketed without losing reliability of information access. The disc has a lead-in area that is prior to all the e-book information and that contains a disc navigation area, and a lead-out area that follows all the e-book information. The disc may include multiple partitions, each partition containing sufficient access information for independent access of the e-book information within the partition without accessing any other partition. Alternatively, the disc may include multiple slots for files and that are equally spaced.

  • Publication number: 20080205230
Abstract: In the invention herein a recordable optical disc is provided with embossed windings of a spiral track or circular tracks in a recording layer of phase change material and with embossed address/timing information located between adjacent windings. User data is received for recording on the disc. The data is written by controlling a laser beam scanning the winding to form marks of different phases of the phase change material at a higher disc speed while reading an address from the disc. The writing is occasionally interrupted in order to calibrate write parameters in order to improve the write quality. After the calibration linking is performed by jumping to a position just before the writing was interrupted, and determining the current position depending on an address read from the disc, and tracking to the position that the writing was interrupted.

  • Publication number: 20080205250
Abstract: The invention relates to operating an optical drive apparatus from parameters read from an associated record carrier. Data-aided adaptation loops are often used in modern communication and storage systems. To ensure fast and robust start-up by ensuring a stable starting point in an adaptation loop and a fast convergence of the adaptation loop, an information data field is provided on, and read from by the drive, an associated optical record carrier. The information data field comprising start-up parameters, the start-up parameters comprising information about recommended write parameters and information related to a resulting channel response for the case when the recommended write parameters are used. In a start-up situation of the optical drive apparatus, the channel response of the bit detector is computed based on the start-up parameters.

  • Patent number: 7418192
Abstract: A dynamic method and system for processing video source frames (e.g., a television movie) with a video processing system (VPS) that includes a processor, a memory structure, input devices, and an output display. The video source frames, which are received by the VPS from a video source, are executed by the processor. While the video source frames are being executed, a subset of the frames, called key frames, are extracted from the video source frames and stored in the memory structure. The extracting of the key frames is implemented in accordance with a frame extraction algorithm. The extracting is terminated prior to completion of execution of the video source frames. Following termination of extracting, the key frames are reviewed by a user with the output display to determine whether to watch the remainder of the video source frames. The key frames are erased after being reviewed.

  • Patent number: 7417523
Abstract: SMT-components known in the art usually have a thickness of approximately 1 mm and no flexibility. According to the present invention windings for an inductor are realized within a substrate, preferably by using copper layers which are already in the substrate. Then, thin metal sheet layers of high permeable material are laminated on top and bottom of the substrate. These layers are structured and then form the magnetic core of the inductor. Advantageously, an inductor may be provided with a very small building height.

  • Patent number: 7417429
Abstract: A novel magnetic resonance imaging method is described, for forming an image of an object from a plurality of signals sampled in a restricted homogeneity region of a main magnet field of a magnetic resonance imaging apparatus. A patient disposed on a table is moved continuously through the bore of the main magnet and spins in a predetermined area of the patient are excited by an excitation pulse from a transmitter antenna, such that an image is formed over a region exceeding largely the restricted region. Data is undersampled in the restricted region by means off at least one receiver antenna in a plurality of receive situations being defined as a block of measurements contiguous in time having preserved magnetisation and presaturation conditions within the excited area of the patient. Fold-over artefacts due to said undersampling are unfolded by means of the known sensitivity pattern of the receiver antenna and/or the properties of selected factors determining said receive situations.
