    Abstract: A tapered plug valve containing a tapered plug surrounded by a sleeve of elastomeric material which deflects upon high fluid pressure applied through the valve inlet port, leakage which might otherwise occur due to such deflection being absorbed by `O` ring seals. The plug may also be urged into the valve body by hydraulic pressure from the inlet port, and this maintains a sealing contact between the elastomeric material and the valve body surrounding the ports.
