Abstract: A system for providing secure document distribution is disclosed. The system permits an author to create a document, secure the document using an access code, encrypt the access code, and forward a message to a recipient, wherein the message includes the document and the encrypted access code. A terminal permits the recipient to open the message, generate an image having information embedded therein, including the encrypted access code. A portable device enables the recipient to capture the image, store predetermined information for decrypting the encrypted access code, capture input information from the recipient used to ensure that the recipient is authorized to use the portable device, and thereafter extract the information embedded in the image, decrypt the encrypted access code using the predetermined information, and evaluate the output to determine if the correct access code needed for access to the document is provided.

Abstract: Methods for efficiently retrieving information from an image of a symbol are described. Symbols are described that contain detection patterns that facilitate the determination of location, alignment, size and orientation of the symbol in an image. Detection patterns are described that possess geometric shapes susceptible to efficient decoding using probabilistic detection algorithms. Detection patterns are described that are provided in colors, shapes and sizes different from the color, shape and sizes of modules carrying information in the symbol. Methods are described for identifying the location and size of detection patterns in images of the symbol and for locating modules in the symbol to facilitate extraction of information carried by the modules.

Abstract: Methods and systems for creating and using redundant and very high capacity barcodes are presented. An individual barcode can include one or more finder patterns, one or more position detection patterns, one or more alignment patterns, one or more orientation detection patterns, one or more format and version information patterns, and one or more modules, where each of these sections can be of a separate size, shape, color and location from the other of these sections. Each individual barcode can be encoded with a separate chunk of data. The individual barcodes can be combined into a composite barcode, which can have patterns and modules used can include many different sizes, shapes, colors and locations of such patterns and modules within the barcode. The individual and composite barcodes can be used to transfer data to a capture device. Original data can be expanded and divided into chunks of data.

The system includes a server configured to present an image to the user via a computer, the image having information embedded therein, and a portable device configured to: allow the user to capture the image, store predetermined information, capture input information from the user, the input information to be used to ensure that the user is authorized to use the portable device, and generate an output based on the information embedded in the image and the predetermined information. The server is further configured to receive the output from the portable device and authenticate the user based on the output. Once the user is authenticated, the user is allowed to access a website via the computer to conduct a transaction with respect to an account associated with the user.

The apparatus includes an image capture device configured to capture an image, the image having information embedded therein, a memory configured to store predetermined information, an input unit configured to receive input information provided by a user, a processor configured to: verify the user based on the input information to ensure that the user is authorized to use the apparatus, and generate an output based on the information embedded in the image and the predetermined information, and an output unit configured to forward the output generated by the processor.
