Abstract: A method and system for parsing of input addresses for further automated processing. A relevant locale for an input address is determined. Based on the locale, an applicable parsing tree is provided so that different address formats can be tested against the input address. The parsing tree is generated from a local address format specification that defines permissible formats for the locale. The local address format specification and the local address component rules are provided to a parsing engine to determine one or more potential parsed addresses based on compliance with specifications. The local address component rules specification is applied to the input address to determine one or more branches of the parsing tree for which the input address matches criteria of the component rules specification. Penalties may be assigned to branches of the tree when disfavored matches occur.

  • Publication number: 20080141838
Abstract: A method for improved tuning of servo motors used to drive guillotine cutters on a high speed inserter machine. The tuning coefficient is continuously varied during the blade's cutting cycle. In a first step of the tuning process, a plurality of discrete positions in the blade cycle are selected for analysis of the optimal tuning coefficients. For these discrete positions, tuning coefficients are determined. After the tuning coefficients have been determined for the discrete locations in the blade cycle, the coefficients for the remainder of the blade cycle are determined through interpolation. In a preferred embodiment, linear interpolation is used. A digital filter then applies the measured and interpolated coefficients to the amplifier that controls the motor. In the preferred embodiment, the step of selecting the discrete positions includes selecting 90 degrees, 180 degrees, 270 degrees, and 360 degrees in a guillotine blade cycle.

Abstract: Methods and systems that provide privacy of signatures on envelopes containing ballots are provided. The envelope for returning ballots includes a flap with a window that aligns with a signature area on the envelope. The window appears opaque under normal lighting conditions, but appears transparent when illuminated with light having a predetermined wavelength. A movable signature stub is positioned on top of the signature area. The voter signs the back of the envelope on the signature stub, thereby imprinting a signature on the signature area by transferring a material from the signature stub to the signature area, and moves the signature stub. The flap of the envelope is then sealed, thereby covering the voter's signature in the signature area with the window of the envelope flap. To read the signature, light having the predetermined wavelength can be directed onto the window, thereby rendering the window transparent and the signature visible.

  • Publication number: 20080141888
Abstract: A postage payment label is provided which includes a substrate having an image provided thereon and a postage mark. The substrate and the image are able to transmit light of one or more first wavelengths (e.g., infrared or ultraviolet light) while the postage mark is able to absorb or reflect light of the one or more first wavelengths. Moreover, the image that is provided on the substrate is able to absorb and/or reflect light of one or more second wavelengths (e.g., visible light). Accordingly, when the image is illuminated with light of the one or more second wavelengths (e.g., visible light), the image conceals a portion or all of the postage mark. The postage mark (or relevant portion thereof), however, may be viewed when the image is illuminated with light of the one or more first wavelengths and not illuminated with light of the one or more second wavelengths.

Abstract: An opt-in email system in which a recipient that has opted in to an email list can recognize and trust that an email has actually come from a desired sender. When a recipient desires to opt-in to an e-mail list, the recipient is sent to a trusted third party certification service that generates a certificate associated with a key pair. A key is maintained at the sender's location by a secure cryptographic device that can verify the certificate and create a signature, using a key of the key pair, for messages intended for the recipient. When a message intended for the recipient is received from the sender, the signature will be verified based on the status of the certificate and the corresponding key of the key pair. If the signature does not verify, it indicates that the recipient has not opted-in to receive emails from this sender.

  • Publication number: 20080135172
Abstract: A method and system for preparing mail pieces that include RFID enabled cards. The improvement provides enhanced tracking and control capabilities for such mail pieces. In an inserter control system, individual RFID signals of the RFID enabled cards are related to particular mail pieces in a mail piece production database. The corresponding RFID enabled cards are fed into the inserter system from a card feeder. An attaching device attaches the cards to a carrier sheet. The inserter system transports the cards and carrier sheets to different stations where other documents are joined with the carrier sheets. The assembled mail pieces are then inserted into envelopes to form finished mail pieces. Sensors are located within the system to detect the RFID signals of the individual cards. The sensed individual RFID numbers are compared with stored mail piece data. The system is programmed to process the mail piece based on instructions in the database corresponding to the sensed number.
