    Abstract: In the field of sheet handling apparatus such as a mail processing machine, it is known to provide infeed apparatus which allows for both the manual and automatic feeding of inserts for processing.The disclosure relates to such infeed apparatus (10) including sensor means (32,33) for detecting (i) whether more than one insert has been fed automatically from one insert tray (13); or (ii) whether an insert has been fed manually from another insert tray (14). In the former case, the apparatus is arranged to signal a fault to an operator; in the latter case operation of the apparatus is automatically continued on sensing of a correctly fed, manually fed insert.

    Abstract: An inserter machine has means for feeding an envelope withdrawn from a storage tray to a flap device 44 capable of opening the envelope flap and forwarding the envelope along a deck 42 with its base edge leading and its open flap trailing. Encoder means 60, 108 are connected for rotation in synchronization with one or more rolls forming part of the forwarding means. The machine also has a means 80 for disconnecting drive to the envelope to stop the envelope at a stuffing station, and a wetter arrangement 116, 118 whereby the envelope flap can be wetted prior to sealing. An envelope stop 128 is provided in a flap closure mechanism 126, 120, 142; the stop being adjustable in position without operator intervention in response to information provided by the encoder means 66, 108 or by data fed in by a user via a keyboard on the machine.

    Abstract: The printwheel setting apparatus is used in a postage meter for setting the posting date printwheels. Each settable member of the apparatus includes digital encoding marks thereon. A charge coupled device is arranged to detect the encoding marks of one or more settable members simultaneously. A lens is disposed between the settable member and the charge coupled device to focus the image of the encoding marks onto the surface of the charge coupled device. Thus, the settings of a number of settable members such as thumbwheels may be determined simultaneously. A shutter may be closed across the charge coupled device to protect it from damage, dust contamination.

    Abstract: A postage meter has a print drum assembly which includes a print drum and a drum shaft. The drum includes selectively settable value printing elements. The drum shaft has, located in one or more grooves therein, a plurality of linearly movable racks. These racks are connected to the value printing elements in such a manner that linear movement of one rack alters the position of a corresponding value printing element. The meter also has a plurality of gears, called cross-over gears, arranged to drive corresponding racks. The cross-over gears driving the racks in the or each groove are arranged side-by-side and are independently driven by respective drive components arranged for rotation about a rotation axis common to the cross-over gears and the drive components.

    Abstract: A postage meter has a rotatable print drum for franking an article. The print drum includes settable value-denoting elements and is mounted on a drum shaft for rotation therewith. A series of motors are each connected to drive a respective one of the value-denoting elements via an intervening drive train. There is a gearbox housing within which the drive trains are housed. The gearbox housing is split into two portions which are shaped so that they together encircle and are supported by the drum shaft. This provides a compact and easily assembled postage meter.

    Abstract: An envelope sealing and feeding device has upper and lower interfitting parts defining a reservoir for a liquid to be used in the sealing operation and a substantially horizontal slot through which an envelope to be sealed can be fed. These parts co-operate with a wetter assembly which includes a wetter blade extending across the slot and a tubular structure containing wicking material and extending substantially vertically downwardly through the upper part and into the liquid reservoir.With this arrangement, replacement of the wetter assembly is made easier. Assembly and dis-assembly of the relevant parts of the machine in order to obtain access to the interior of the liquid reservoir can be done without difficulty.

    Abstract: The postage meter incorporates an accounts verification system which ensures that an authority, such as the U.K. General Post Office, is provided with regular and accurate readings without the need for a meter, such as a postage meter, to be read by the authority's inspector. The account verification provides for a system in which the meter is disabled at preset intervals and in which operation of the meter for the next interval is conditional upon the user providing an accurate meter reading to the authority. The meter includes a funding register and a machine inhibiting system. The machine inhibiting system is operable to inhibit operation of the meter following a predetermined period of time or a predetermined number of machine cycles of operation of the machine. A processor system is provided for generating a code dependent on the accounting data stored in the funding register.

    Abstract: A counter mechanism for a postage meter includes a number of sections each having a number wheel (14) repesenting the respective order of accounted value, transfer mechanisms in the form of Geneva gears connecting the number wheels (14) to provide carry-over movements between adjacent sections. A ratchet mechanism is provided in the number wheel (14) to allow rotation of the number drum (16) as a result of an account input from the postage meter, even when a carry movement gear (18) of the number wheel (14) is locked by the Geneva gear. The ratchet mechanism includes an internally-profiled surface on one part (16) having ratchet steps (70) separated by portions (76) of relatively low gradient. Projections (74) are provided on a central member (72) of another part (18), the projections extending substantially tangential to the internally-profiled surface so as to engage in the ratchet steps (70) in the event of attempted rotation in one direction and to stop such rotation.
