Abstract: A method of displaying a character. A representation of a character is determined in a bit map having a number of bits greater than a number of pixels in a region of a display in which the character is to be displayed. Based on a relative number of bits that are on in respective portions of the bit map, luminances for corresponding pixels are determined. The character is displayed in the region having the particular number of pixels, and the pixels are displayed with the determined luminances. A system for displaying a character is disclosed, in which the character is to be displayed within a region of a display having a particular number of pixels. According to various embodiments of the invention, the display comprises a television, a color television, a display of a hand held device, a billboard, or other display device. A method for displaying a shape is described. A method of displaying a shape is disclosed. A television system and a computer program product are disclosed.

Abstract: The invention provides a method and system for entry and editing of multimedia objects for communication and presentation, associating multimedia objects with received sequences of keystroke or mouse action abbreviations. When an abbreviation is detected, the abbreviation is replaced with the associated multimedia object. Each multimedia object has editable properties, and each set of multimedia objects can be collected into an ensemble, which itself can have editable properties. One such ensemble property is a “theme,” which presents a variant of each multimedia object consistent with the theme.

Abstract: A method for digital image magnification in a graphical user interface is disclosed. In contrast with prior methods which magnify a selected region of an original image without preserving its context, the present method provides a method for magnification that allows simultaneous viewing of the magnified image and its unmagnified context. In a preferred embodiment, the method provides a floating window [122] superimposed on an original image. Displayed within the floating window is a magnified image of a selected region of the original image. The floating window is centrally positioned over the selected region. In one aspect of the invention, the floating window is partially transparent so that portions of the original image within the floating window [124] are displayed in a faint manner in comparison to portions of the original image outside the floating window [126].

Abstract: The invention provides a method and system for providing features for internet access at an internet appliance which go beyond the resource limitations of the internet appliance. The desired features are primarily implemented on the server, and coupled to the internet appliance for display, responsive to the ability of the internet appliance to provide those features. (1) The internet appliance and the server adapt to communication link limitations by dynamically adjusting picture quality or size for graphics to be displayed. (2) The internet appliance and the server adapt to memory and processor limitations by dynamically running applets at the server and intercepting display functions of applets for display at the internet appliance. (3) The internet appliance and the server adapt to memory and processor limitations by dynamically running editing programs or web pages at the server and by dynamically adjusting picture quality or size for graphics to be displayed.

Abstract: The invention provides a method and system for dynamic downloading of hypertext electronic mail messages. The system includes a mail server for receiving electronic mail messages and their headers, and a mail client for downloading electronic mail messages and their headers from the mail receiver and presenting downloaded electronic mail messages and headers to an operator. The mail client dynamically downloads and presents electronic mail messages responsive to interactive instructions from an operator, preloads and stores electronic mail messages for subsequent presentation to the operator, and organizes electronic mail messages in hypertext sections for selection by and presentation to the operator.

Abstract: Displaying a set of characters in a size larger than characters already accepted and displayed in the system. A method for accepting input in a system. The method includes receiving a set of user inputs associated with a set of characters. The set of characters is displayed in size larger than characters already accepted and displayed in the system. A user selection of at least a character from the set of characters is received. In response to the user selection, the character is displayed in a size generally corresponding to characters already accepted and displayed by the system. According to one embodiment of the invention, the set of characters comprises kanji. An embodiment of the invention includes a computer system including a display, a user input device, a memory including a data structure that associates sets of user inputs with respective sets of characters, and a computer executable code.

Abstract: Method of navigating on a display. A cursor is displayed within a first portion of the display. The first portion has edges and displays a portion of information. In response to movement of a pointing device, the cursor is moved within the first portion of the display. If the cursor comes within a particular distance of an edge of the first portion of the display, at least a partially different portion of the information is displayed. In response to a command and in response to movement of the pointing device, the cursor is moved beyond the first portion of the display. The information may comprise a document, a graphic, or a document including at least a graphic. The display may comprise a display of a word processor, a display of a web browser, or other display. A method of navigating on a display is described. A method of navigating on a display of a web browser and system for navigating on a display are also described.

Abstract: The invention provides a method and system for presenting infromation in a web document using a program applet to restrict further copying or redistribution. The web document includes a first region in which a graphical element or other information is displayed, and a second region covering the first region in which a program applet is invoked by a server for the web document. The program applet is dynamically created upon access, and assigned a serial number. The program applet contacts the server for permission to display the graphical element or other information; thus, the server can control, by granting or denying permission, when and if the program applet displays the graphical or other information.
