Abstract: Rosin is modified by maleation and then by imidization resulting in attaching a cationic polymer or cationic material upon the rosin. Alternatively, rosin can be fumarated and then cationic material attached by amide links. The products may be used for an efficient paper size and other applications of rosin products.

Abstract: A process for forming a rosin-containing size emulsion for paper sizing, in which a basic aqueous first mixture containing at least partially saponified rosin is mixed with a basic aqueous dispersion of casein and formed into an oil-in-water emulsion, wherein an emulsion-stabilizing amount of a casein-compatible rosin-emulsifying synthetic resin is substituted for a portion of the casein, the portion being within a range of about 1-80% by weight of the casein.
Abstract: A paper sizing agent is a rosin stabilized with a rosin-stabilizing amount of a cationic polyamidoamine-ethyleneimine-epichlorohydrin polymer resin, which is mixed with an aqueous dispersion containing paper pulp in a method for the production of paper.
