  • Patent number: 6926165
Abstract: The combination of a container and a screw-type lid is improved by a tamper-evident feature comprising a locking tab on the exterior of the container having upwardly facing teeth and mating teeth on the lid, the teeth on the container and lid being arranged so as be slidable relative to one another while in mutual engagement when the lid is rotated in one direction and to lock to one another when the lid is urged to rotate in an opposite direction. The tab is tearable to terminate the locking action, thereby evidencing tampering. A catch member formed on the container is positioned to engage and cam one of several latch lugs formed on the lid, whereby to establish a locking action with that latch lug. The catch member prevents removal of the lid from the container until the engaged latch lug is pressed inwardly far enough for it to be released from the catch member, whereupon the lid may be unscrewed from the container.

  • Patent number: 6920998
Abstract: A container is provided with child drowning protection in the form of a bottom wall that is contoured in a manner that (1) allows it to stand upright on a flat support such as a floor, shelf or shipping pallet, and (2) in the event that the container contains some water or other liquid and a toddler leans forward into the container, e.g., in an attempt to retrieve a toy that has fallen into the container, the weight of the child on the container will cause the container to tip over, thereby spilling the contents and preventing the child from drowning in the container. Containers embodying the invention may be provided with covers that facilitate stacking covered containers one on top of the other. Additionally, the containers may be formed with an inclined sidewall, whereby to permit a plurality of open empty containers to be nested one inside the other.

  • Patent number: 6851569
Abstract: The combination of a reusable lid and a container, the lid being provided with locking tabs and the container being provided with openings designed to accept the locking tabs and to make an interlocking connection by relatively rotating the lid and container. A latch element is formed on the lid for engagement with one of a plurality of cooperating catch elements formed on the container. The engaged catch element prevents removal of the lid from the container until the latch element is depressed inwardly far enough to allow the lid to be turned to a position in which the tabs may be removed from the openings.

  • Patent number: 6273291
Abstract: Containers with replaceable lids are provided for holding fresh fruit or other food that is to be quick frozen. The containers and lids are designed so that the containers may be stacked one upon the other and so that flow passages are provided between the lid of one container and the bottom of a like container resting on that lid to permit flow therebetween of a gaseous freezing medium such as frigid air.

  • Patent number: 5944214
Abstract: The combination of a reusable lid and a container, the lid being provided with external threads and the container being provided with internal threads adjacent its upper end for mating with said external threads. The lid is assembled to the container by engagement of the external and internal threads on the lid and container respectively. Preferably the lid has a sealing ring disposed adjacent to the underside of an outer peripheral ledge for engagement with a selected portion of the container, so as to tightly seal off the contents of the container. A latch element is formed on the lid for engagement with a cooperating catch element formed on the container. The latch element prevents removal of the lid from the container until the latching element is released from the catch element.

  • Patent number: 5873482
Abstract: A tamper-evident closure for a container is provided. The container is formed with means at its open upper end for making a snap fit locking connection with a cover. The container has a peripheral flange with a skirt section that surrounds and is spaced radially from the container's side wall, and the cover has a depending skirt that extends down around the upper end of the container and has a free bottom edge that lies immediately adjacent to the flange. The flange has an outer surface that is flush with the adjacent portion of the outer surface of the skirt, so that essentially the flange appear to be a continuation of the skirt. As a consequence the closure formed by the cover (lid) and the container is resistant to opening by a small child.

  • Patent number: 5725122
Abstract: A lid assembly is provided for a pail which is characterized by a receptacle portion that is closed of by a secondary lid. The receptacle portion is provided for storing and displaying items related to the contents of the pail, e.g., small tools or instructions. The lid assembly may also have a pouring spout, either within or outside of the receptacle portion, so that the contents of the pail may be emptied without removing the entire lid assembly.

  • Patent number: 5577632
Abstract: A safety ring for a pail to prevent access to the contents of the pail by a small child. The ring is adapted to fit within and interlock with a pail. Preferably the safety ring is assembled with the lid for the pail, but is separable from the lid once the lid has been attached to the pail, whereupon the ring will remain in the pail when the lid is removed to expose the contents of the pail.

  • Patent number: 4930656
Abstract: A lid for sealing a container has a removable tear skirt. The lid includes a cap portion with a circular crown and depending sidewall. An undulating annular groove which defines a frangible thin walled strip divides the sidewall into an upper section and a lower tear skirt. The cap portion has a reinforced inner wall assembly that is spaced apart from an outer depending wall, the tear skirt being attached to a lower portion of the outer wall. A weakened area adjacent to and intersecting a small lateral slot formed in the undulating groove facilitates breaking of the tear skirt. When the tear skirt is removed, a plurality of bendable flaps are formed at the lower portion of the outer wall. A fastening rib formed on an inner surface of the outer wall is configured to lockingly engage a locking flange on the container for securing the lid to the container. Opening slots provided in the flaps are configured to receive a tool for disengaging the fastening ribs and the locking flange.

  • Patent number: 4518143
Abstract: An open-ended container with unitary external wire bail support posts and tooling for its manufacture in which each support post incorporates a pair of partially overlapping wall segments differently spaced from the sidewall of the container body, the more distant segment being further from the sidewall than the nearer by the thickness of the nearer. In a preferred embodiment, the more distant segment is provided with a slot extending from the end of the wall segment nearest the open end of the container body toward the opposite end of the wall segment, and having a bottom surface defined in part by a portion of the closer wall segment. The closer wall segment is provided with an oppositely directed slot arranged to in part overlap a portion of the first slot. The overlap of the two slots form an aperture dimensioned to accept the bail end. In this embodiment, the supporting structure holding the pair of wall segments apart from the sidewall is concave opening away from the open end of the container.
