  • Patent number: 5788476
Abstract: A gas lighter uses the depression of an actuation lever to trigger a piezoelectric generator to generate a current and raise a gas lever to allow the flow of gas through a nozzle. The current is conducted to the nozzle to ignite the gas. A slider, movable towards and away from the body of the lighter is engaged with the actuating lever to not allow the actuating lever to be depressed when the slider is away from the body of the lighter. The engagement is by means of a pair of resilient fingers of the slider and pair of sliding surfaces on the actuating lever.

  • Patent number: 5704776
Abstract: A safety lighter is disclosed. The lighter comprises a lighter body, a nozzle, a mounting frame disposed on the lighter body, and an actuating lever which is reciprocatingly mounted on the mounting frame between forward and rearward positions. The front end of the lever grips the nozzle and moves it from its lower position, where gas cannot escape from said nozzle, to the nozzle's upper position where gas is ejected from said nozzle. The rear end of the lever has a downwardly extending projection which can be received into a recess in the top of the lighter body when the lever is in the forward position. When the lever is in the rearward position and the rear end of the lever is pressed downward, its projection comes into vertical engagement with the top of the lighter body, which prevents the lever from pivoting far enough to lift the nozzle.

  • Patent number: 5509799
Abstract: The invention is a flint replaceable lighter. In a preferred embodiment the invented lighter includes a lighter body including means for containing fuel. Fitted upon it is a striker wheel assembly including a striker wheel, a striker wheel support superstructure into which the striker wheel is inserted and a hollow support shaft disposed below said superstructure. A flint is loosely disposed in the support shaft, with the upper end of a spring inserted in the support shaft below the flint. The spring urges the flint against the striker wheel above it. When the user removes the spring, the spent flint may be removed and a new one inserted into the shaft. The spring is then reinserted into the shaft as well. The lighter body is outfitted with a means for releasably receiving the striker wheel assembly.

  • Patent number: 5460516
Abstract: In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the lighter comprises an igniter having a striker wheel which may rotate about an axis first in a clockwise direction and second in a counter-clockwise direction when the wheel is viewed from its side. A stopping means is mounted on the wheel so that its range of movement at least in the clockwise direction is limited. It is while the wheel is being rotated in its clockwise direction that it and the igniter's flint may cooperate together to create a spark which ignites the lighter fuel. When the wheel is rotated in the counter-clockwise direction, no spark is created. When the wheel has been rotated to its extreme limit of its clockwise movement, the lighter can no longer be ignited unless the wheel is moved in accordance with two separate actions, that is, first rotating the wheel in the counter-clockwise direction and then back in the clockwise direction.

The front end of the lever grips the nozzle and moves it from its lower position, where gas cannot escape from said nozzle, to the nozzle's upper position where gas is ejected from said nozzle when the rear end of the lever is depressed. The rear end of the lever has a downwardly extending leg. A sliding member is reciprocatingly mounted on the lighter body between a first position in which the rear end of the lever cannot be depressed because the leg contacts the sliding member and a second position in which a hole in the sliding member is located below the leg so that the rear end of the lever may be depressed.

When the sliding member is in the second position and the rear end of the lever is depressed, the leg engages the inclined surface and pushes the sliding member downward and backward until the leg can travel into the hole.

  • Patent number: 5356286
Abstract: The invention is an improved lighter having a drum disposed in an upper portion of a lighter's lighter body, which drum rotates between a safety locked position and a lighter operational position. The drum comprises an arm which extends outward from the lighter body so as to be accessible to the user, and two upstanding stud members which extend into slots formed in the platform of a mounting frame disposed atop of the lighter body. The studs and slots are configured so that when the drum is in the safety locked position, the lighter's nozzle actuating lever cannot be moved a sufficient distance to cause the nozzle to be open.
