  • Patent number: 5697514
Abstract: Closing of a metal container and the like using a special end closure. The open end portion of a container is outwardly folded to define a supporting ledge and a seaming or curling flange for the end closure. Such flange is folded or rolled inwardly to capture an end closure including a plastic frame that defines a dispensing opening and has bonded thereto an end panel to be peeled back to allow dispensing of product. A seaming flange is folded about a peripheral portion of an outer boundary of the frame member and then the two are enfolded generally flat above the supporting ledge of the container to form an inwardly directed seam. A modified end closure comprises a molded plastic frame member which matches the configuration of a ledge portion of the container so the seaming flange and peripheral border portion of the frame member can be rolled together in an inwardly directed curl. The closing operations can be performed without axial pressure on the container wall so they can be thinner than normal.

  • Patent number: 5634567
Abstract: This relates to an end closure for conventional types of containers which may be in the form of glass or plastic jars and bottles or in the form of specially formed metal containers having a folded outwardly projecting annular rim at the top thereof. The end closures are constructed so as to be snapped in place on the containers thus retaining the closures on and keeping the containers closed by a mechanical interlock between the respective closure and container. Further, the end closures have heat-bondable surfaces which when subjected to low temperature heat, such as by heating the rims of the containers or by heating the packaged product within a retort cooker, the heat-bondable surfaces of the end closures will bond to the touching surfaces of the container.

  • Patent number: 5360588
Abstract: Tooling for forming an article which includes an injection molded peripheral frame defining an opening closed by a panel insert. The panel insert is struck from sheet material and together with an associated punch or carrier cooperates with a split mold to completely define the cavity for injection molding of the article. Inasmuch as the panel insert is heat bondable to the injection molded frame and forms a portion of the walls of the cavity, it is automatically bonded to the injection molded frame. The panel insert may be peelable from the frame and include a pull tab for effecting the same. The pull tab may be formed by the same punch which cuts out the panel insert, or the pull tab may be separately formed from sheet material adjacent an intended position of a panel insert and folded into overlying relation to the intended position of the panel insert and staked to the sheet material, after which the panel insert is cut from the sheet material by a punch.

  • Patent number: 5246134
Abstract: A press-on closure 10 for a tubular container 12. The closure includes a molded plastic frame 14 having a ledge 28 on which an end panel 16 is seated and to which the end panel is peelably secured. The end panel has a free outer peripheral edge unbonded to the frame. The resultant closed container is subject to retorting with the result that heretofore the end panel could axially outwardly deform and possibly initiate internal peeling. To prevent this peeling, the frame is provided with a thin flexible integral flange 36 forming a continuation of the ledge on which the end panel is seated. The end panel is also peelably bonded to the flange and the flange deforms or deflects with the end panel. The frame has a press fit onto the container, which is preferably in the form of a metal can, which at the end thereof to be closed by the closure is provided with a radially outwardly directed curl 48.

  • Patent number: 5125528
Abstract: Closures for containers, such as cans and the like, wherein the closure is comprised of an end panel and a frame member which, preferrably, are attached together during an insert-injection molding operation used for forming the frame member. Depending upon the respective materials, the attachment therebetween may comprise heat-bonding or adhesives, and the like. The various end panels have a displaceable panel portion for providing an opening in the closure to provide access to the product(s) within the container. The various panel portions are defined by weakening lines, perforations or cut lines in the end panel and molded runners for "repairing" and/or sealing weakened or lanced portions of the end panels. The molded runners provide beam strength for protecting against excessive bulging during autoclave or other sterilization processes and against buckling during vacuum processing.
