    Abstract: In order to grow a GaAs.sub.1-x P.sub.x fixed-composition layer of excellent quality, which has a predetermined composition x, over a GaAs or GaP single crystal substrate, a varied-composition layer is formed between the substrate and the fixed-composition layer. The varied-composition layer comprises at least two varied-composition layer portions and at least one fixed-composition layer portion with a predetermined thickness that is formed between the varied-composition layer portions, whereby dislocations caused by lattice mismatch with the GaP substrate are settled in the varied-composition layer portions and recovered in the fixed-composition layer portion between the varied-composition layer portions, thereby minimizing the dislocations, and thus making it possible to obtain a GaAs.sub.1-x P.sub.x layer of excellent crystal quality, which has a predetermined composition x.

    Abstract: In a packet containing a plurality of dual tab merchandising bags, each bag includes a front panel, a rear panel, each side of said bag between the front and rear panels including, a front gusset folded from the front panel, a rear gusset folded from the rear panel, the front and rear gussets joined at a common gusset fold to form an endless tube of bag material around the periphery of said bag. The bags are sealed and severed at the bottom and open and severed at the top, and collapsed and folded one on another so that said gusset sides are folded upon themselves and collapsed under and between the bag front and rear panels. Handle holes are provided centrally of said front and rear panels adjacent said open top of the bag. Tabs are adjacent the sides of the bags at the top of the bag, the tabs having a first portion overlying the gussets and a second portion overlying the central portion of the bag between the gussets, these tabs fused together to form said packet of bags.

    Abstract: Disclosed is a resin composition comprised of (a) 5 to 95 weight % of a saponified ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer, (b) 95 to 5 weight % of a polyamide resin in which the content (in .mu.-equivalent/g of the polymer) of the terminal amino group in the molecule is larger than the content (in .mu.-equivalent/g of the polymer) of the terminal carboxyl group in the molecule, and (c) 0.5 to 10 weight % of a modified polyolefin formed by grafting an unsaturated carboxylic acid, or an acid anhydride or salt thereof onto a polyolefin. The resin composition can be stably shaped for a long time by extrusion.

    Abstract: A semiconductor laser HL has an external resonator including a reflector R which reflects the emitted laser beam back into the front facet of the laser. The light emitted from the rear facet of the laser falls on a photodiode PD which generates a signal s which is evaluated by an evaluation unit AE. By differentiation or other processing of the shapes of pulses in the signal s, it is possible to determine the direction of change of any of several operating parameters of the laser system, such as the length L between laser HL and reflector R, the tilt angle of reflector R with respect to the optical axis of the laser or the refractive index n of the medium in the space N defined between the laser and the reflector. For example, one can detect when gas G is fed into space N to change the medium from ordinary air to carbon dioxide, or the reverse.
