    Abstract: A tool that can screen bacteria for ?-lactamases against a panel of various antibiotics is desirable. A biosensor incorporating an indicator molecule into ?-lactamases may achieve this purpose, but it requires that the attached indicator molecule must not impair the binding affinity of the protein to a great extent to provide a higher sensitivity. A modified ?-lactamases with a residue on the ?-loop or outside the ?-loop but close to the active site of ?-lactamase being replaced by a reactive residue is developed in this invention.

    Abstract: Metal oxide nanowires are being investigated to make nanodevices and nanosensors. High operation temperatures or vacuum is required in the manufacturing of metal oxide nanowires by existing vapour phase evaporation methods. This invention provides a method of manufacturing metal oxide nanowires by first providing a metal to form a non-linear substantially planar structure defining a surface. The metal is then heated and maintained at a temperature from 300 to 800° C., and then exposed to oxygen and water vapour containing air stream for a sufficient period of time to form the metal oxide nanowires. The oxygen containing air stream flows in a direction substantially parallel to the plane of the structure. Relatively low temperatures may be used and no vacuum is required in this method, thereby reducing the overall manufacturing costs. Further, this method is able to manufacture different densities of the metal oxide nanowires simultaneously.

    Abstract: The operational frequency of existing magnetoelectric materials having metallic or ceramic magnetostrictive materials and ceramic piezoelectric materials may be limited to a few kilohertz due to the presence of eddy-current losses in the metallic magnetostrictive phase. Further, these materials may be difficult to machine and fabricate due to their brittleness. Additionally, it may be difficult to tailor and optimize the properties (i.e., magnetoelectric voltage coefficient ?E, etc.) of the devices. This invention provides a magnetoelectric element including at least one set of alternating piezoelectric layers and magnetostrictive composite layers. The magnetostrictive composite layer includes at least one magnetostrictive material dispersed in first concentrated zones within a first polymer matrix, wherein all of the concentrated zones are orientated along a first direction. It is found that the conversion efficiency (i.e., ?E) varies in accordance with applied magnetic control field Hcontrol.

    Abstract: The present invention provides a piezoelectric ceramic composition, especially a lead-free piezoelectric ceramic composition, with a suitable amount of CeO2 or CeO2-containing complex additives, which is represented by the following formula: (Na0.475K0.475Li0.05)(Nb1-xAx)O3+yCeO2+zBO2 wherein “A” represents Sb or Sb+Ta, “B” represents a tetravalent transition metal, 0?x?0.2, 0.2 wt % <y<1.2 wt % and 0?z 1 wt %. Addition of CeO2 or CeO2-containing complex additives suppresses melting and abnormal grain growth of (Na0.475K0.475Li0.05)(Nb1-xAx)O3 during sintering, thereby improving sinterability and increasing the density of the composition. As a result, the dielectric and piezoelectric properties of the ceramics are enhanced. Furthermore, the represented compositions have a wide sintering temperature range so that the process for preparing such a lead-free piezoelectric ceramic composition has high degree efficiency.

    Abstract: Synchronizing the clocks of nodes or stations in a communications network in a way that is independent of computation and switching time. This may be done by synchronizing pseudo-random noise clocks (found in the nodes of a spread spectrum communication system) or by synchronizing chip sequence clocks (found in the nodes of a CDMA communication system). In this way, the accuracy of synchronization should only be affected by the resolution of a matched filter (i.e., a facility to match or correlate bit sequences) in the node. Once synchronized, these nodes may be used to locate another node or station based on transmission propagation delays determined by the synchronization method.

    Abstract: A process for measuring snarling properties of a yarn is provided. Firstly a first and a second point of the yarn are held in close proximity, and a portion of the yarn between the two points is of a predetermined length. A predetermined tension force is temporarily exerted to the portion of the yarn, and simultaneously the portion of the yarn is temporarily restricted from twisting when the tension force is exerted. Then the portion of the yarn is released from the tension force such that the portion of the yarn is able to twist freely so as to form snarls thereon. Thereafter, the snarling properties of the yarn are measured by detecting an amount of the snarls thereby formed.

    Abstract: Multipath signals (rays) emanating from an object of interest are processed to locate the object. Multipath signals may be accepted, screened, and associated with a specific object by an observer. Information (time, amplitude, and angle information) may be recorded for each ray. A set of incoming rays associated with a signal from an object are traced back toward the emanating object generating traceback ray segments. Candidate crossings of ray traceback segments are tested for time and/or amplitude consistency with ray information, and candidate crossings with inconsistent amplitude and/or time information may be eliminated from consideration. If there is only one candidate crossing remaining, it may be used to define the object location. Otherwise, the remaining crossings may be grouped, each grouping with a crossing cardinality, and location. Multiple crossings of multiple rays may be grouped into clusters with a cluster cardinality and diameter.

    Abstract: Decalcification can be performed by using acid or other agents. It may be difficult to decalcify large bone block within ours. This invention provides a bone-decalcifying agent including a calcium desolving agent for desolving calcium ions of bones, and a bubble-forming agent for generating microbubbles when the bone-decalcifying agent is exposed to ultrasonic vibration. It is found that bones may be decalcified in a relatively short time using the bone-decalcifying agent of this invention.
