  • Patent number: 5904101
Abstract: A transportation system for levitated propulsion of a vehicle relative to a guideway having first sections for linear vehicle travel and second sections for turning movements of the vehicle is disclosed. The system includes AC-excited magnets for low-speed levitated travel in pivot turns, guideway switching areas, and curving sections of guideway including superelevated structure. The system includes guideway mounted primary electrical members in pivot turns and guideway switching areas. In switching areas vehicle steering is provided by null flux loops located on the guideway structure. In the curving sections of guideway, there is a dovetail trough containing secondary electrical members that interact with deployable primary electrical members on the vehicle which are independently positioned and powered for propelling the vehicle along the curving sections.

  • Patent number: 5868077
Abstract: An electrodynamic suspension system levitates a platform or a transportation vehicle by an array of onboard superconducting electromagnetic coils forming a primary member overlying a secondary member on the guideway in a transverse flux orientation with respect to a plane of levitation of the moveable member above the secondary member on the guideway. The superconducting coils are energized by alternating current to produce an alternating field of magnetic flux. The frequency of the alternating current is selectable down to direct current. The frequency is selected to cause the vehicle to be levitated statically above the guideway. Once levitated the frequency is reduced as the speed of the vehicle increases along the guideway usually not in excess of 60 miles per hour.

  • Patent number: 5628252
Abstract: An apparatus for guiding and levitating a vehicle. The apparatus comprises a guideway mechanism upon which the vehicle travels. The apparatus is also comprised of a mechanism for actively controlling differential and lateral guidance or differential and vertical levitation strength of the vehicle with respect to the guideway mechanism. The controlling mechanism is electrodynamically reactive with the guideway mechanism. A method for guiding and levitating a vehicle. The method comprises the steps of guiding a vehicle along the guideway with electrodynamic guidance coils. Then, there is the step of actively controlling alternating current through the guidance coils to correspond with guideway curvature so the vehicle is maintained in a stable position relative to the guideway as it moves around a curve in the guideway and experiences roll compensation.

  • Patent number: 5596469
Abstract: An electrical fault limiter having first, second, third, and fourth magnetic cores. The first magnetic core opposes the second magnetic core and is adjacent to the third magnetic core. The fourth magnetic core opposes the third magnetic core and is adjacent to the second magnetic core. A rotor is disposed between the first and second magnetic cores, and the third and fourth magnetic cores. The rotor is rotatable about a rotor axis. The first and second magnetic cores are disposed on a first side of the rotor axis and the third and fourth magnetic cores are disposed on a second side of the rotor axis. Each core has a first arm, a second arm and a body to which the first and second arms are connected. Each body has a superconduction bias coil disposed about it. Each arm has a conduction mode coil disposed about it.
