    Abstract: A method of constructing a rotor for use in a high speed controlled-pole electric machine includes the steps of positioning an inner layer of remagnetizable permanent magnetic material over substantially an entire circumference of a rotor core exterior surface, and positioning a outer layer of remagnetizable permanent magnetic material positioned over substantially an entire circumference defined by said inner layer of remagnetizable permanent magnetic material. The inner layer of permanent magnetic material can have a first set of magnetic properties and the outer layer of permanent magnetic material can have a distinct second set of magnetic properties. The layers of remagnetizable permanent magnetic material can be formed from a plurality of magnetic blocks. The method can include the step of binding the layers of remagnetizable permanent magnetic material to the rotor using high strength wire.

    Abstract: A rotor for use in a high speed controlled-pole electric machine can include a rotor core having an exterior surface; a first layer of remagnetizable magnetic material positioned about the rotor core exterior surface; and a first layer of high strength fiber or wire binding the first layer of remagnetizable magnetic material to the rotor core exterior surface. The rotor can also have a additional layers of remagnetizable magnetic material disposed about the first layer of remagnetizable magnetic material and the rotor core and each bound to the rotor core by a its own layer of high strength wire. To resist significant centripetal force, the high strength wire and fiber layers should exhibit strength properties similar to common music wire having a tensile strength ranging from 225,000 PSI to over 400,000 PSI. Moreover, though the internal layers of high strength wire can have low coercive magnetic properties, the outermost layer of high strength wire preferably comprises non-magnetic high strength wire.

    Abstract: An AC machine comprises: a motor energized by an AC source subject to irregularities of frequency and voltage; a generator driven by the motor for supplying an AC output signal of substantially constant frequency and voltage, the generator having a rotor with a layer of a re-magnetizable, relatively high coercive magnetic material on the rotor and a stator of a soft magnetic material having a pole piece and an excitation coil on the pole piece, the stator and the rotor rotating relative to one another with a clearance enabling rotor poles to be formed on the re-magnetizable layer by current energizing the excitation coil; and, a control signal generator responsive to at least one of the AC output signal and a signal representative of the current energizing the excitation coil for generating pulses of programmed wave shapes which differ in at least one of width, phase and magnitude as necessary to modify the rotor poles during the irregularities of the AC source to maintain the substantially constant frequency

Each rotor has an innermost layer of magnetizable permanent magnetic material in which the concentrated coils in the stator produce a desired pattern of magnetic poles reacting with the rotating field of the main windings. The machine can function as a synchronous AC motor, or a constant frequency output dual AC generator or as an AC motor-generator with long ride-through time. A UPS system comprises the machine in the motor-generator mode, with clutch means to connect an engine to the rotor shaft to start the engine.

    Abstract: The present invention relates to a generator system connected to an external A.C. power source for supplying electrical A.C. power to a load for prolonged periods when the external electrical A.C. power source fails. The system comprises a main A.C. generator unit capable of generating an A.C. potential at a selected frequency and voltage for the load, and an auxiliary A.C. generator is connected to the main generator for generating A.C. at a high frequency. This high frequency A.C. is conveyed to a relatively small high speed motor and flywheel unit in a sealed chamber, which unit at full speed can store large amounts of rotational kinetic energy. The high speed motor has a stator armature with a power winding and an excitation coil, and a cooperating rotor of soft magnetic material having a cylindrical surface with a layer of magnetizable permanent magnet material thereon. When energized with the high frequency A.C., the power winding causes the rotor to rotate as a hysteresis motor.

    Abstract: This invention relates to a power supply system having the capability of furnishing to a load sensitive to electrical faults and interruptions, electrical power for prolonged periods of time after a utility or other external power supply source thereto is interrupted. The system comprises a main A.C. generator furnishing A.C. potential at a selected frequency and a selected voltage to the sensitive load, an auxiliary A.C. generator connected operatively thereto and a driving means for the generators energized with electricity from the external power supply source which is subject to outages and faults. The auxiliary generator generates A.C. potential at a much higher frequency than from the main A.C. generator and this higher frequency A.C. is supplied to a high speed A.C. induction motor and a flywheel unit in a sealed chamber, which unit can store large amounts of kinetic energy at full speed. Upon interruption of electricity from the utility or other external power source, the high speed A.C.

Phase shifting means are provided in the circuit leading to the excitation coil to enable the phase of the A.C. current being supplied thereto to be shifted with respect to the phases of the A.C.
