Abstract: A door unlatching apparatus and system for automating the retraction of spring-loaded latches commonly found in residential and commercial door knob assemblies. The apparatus includes a base plate mountable to a door or door frame, an unlatching plate having an aperture to receive the latch, a motor assembly, and a linkage assembly configured to translate motor rotation into linear movement of the unlatching plate. The unlatching plate moves from a first position to a second position, engaging a sloped portion of the latch to depress it and covering the base plate aperture to prevent re-engagement with a strike plate, thereby permitting the door to open freely. The apparatus may include electronic control circuitry, wireless communication capability, integration with smart lock systems, proximity sensors, user interface elements, and a latch popper assembly for physically moving the door to an ajar position.
