Patent number: 6426626Abstract: A method and apparatus for testing spark plugs and ignition coils. An apparatus includes a power supply for supplying power to an ignition coil to generate a spark across a spark plug. A capture circuit captures an energy signal reflected from the ignition coil in response to the spark. A comparator circuit compares the captured energy signal to a predetermined signal. A method includes the steps of supplying power to an ignition coil to generate a spark across a spark plug, capturing an energy signal reflected from the ignition coil in response to the spark and comparing the captured energy signal to a predetermined signal. The predetermined signal represents one of a distinct group of reflected energy signals which indicate various defects in the coil or plug. Preferably, a match between the captured energy signal and the predetermined signal is used to indicate to the user a defective coil or plug.Type: GrantFiled: March 29, 1999Date of Patent: July 30, 2002Assignee: Progressive Tool & Industries CompanyInventor: Steven F. Patent number: 5750933Abstract: A flexible strain relief device having a center through aperture for receiving cable end portions to be installed into a carrier. The strain relief device has a solid cone shaped portion and a rectangular portion constructed of flexible material having self-extinguishing properties. The rectangular portion is configured to permanently bond to a nut adapter. The perimeter defining the through aperture of the solid cone-shaped portion includes angled circumferential ribs extending partially into the aperture for providing ease during insertion of the cable end portions and resistance for removal of the cable end portions. The nut adapter includes a first member secured to an upper portion of the inner perimeter defining the through aperture; and a rotatable member which is rotatably attached to the first member for operative connection to the carrier so that cone-shaped portion can rotate relative to the carrier.Type: GrantFiled: September 10, 1996Date of Patent: May 12, 1998Assignee: Progressive Tool & Industries CompanyInventor: Charles P. Patent number: 5739499Abstract: A pair of tongs position the first and second electrodes with respect to the workpiece while the tongs rotate with respect to one another about a pivot axis. A counterbalancing mechanism balances the first and second electrodes when in or in close proximity to, the welding position, where the electrodes compressively engage opposite sides of the workpiece during the welding operation. The counterbalancing mechanism is disposed with respect to the pivot axis for biasing one of the tongs in a rotational direction with respect to the pivot axis, such that the weld gun apparatus including the pair of tongs and tong actuator are balanced about the pivot axis when in the closed position. The counterbalance mechanism may include a torsion spring connected to the pivot pin defining the pivot axis. The biasing force of the torsion spring may be adjusted to achieve the desired counterbalancing force to balance the weight of the weld gun assembly about the pivot pin.Type: GrantFiled: September 12, 1996Date of Patent: April 14, 1998Assignee: Progressive Tool & Industries CompanyInventors: Richard F. Patent number: 5697752Abstract: An apparatus for conveying panels, such as vehicle body side panels to and from work stations located at spaced locations along a conveyor includes a panel support frame mounted on the conveyor for movement along the conveying path with the support frame in an elevated generally horizontal conveying position. The support frame carries a plurality of mechanically actuable releasable clamps adapted to retain a panel engaged against a group of locator pads fixedly mounted on one side of the support frame. A second group of locator pads movably mounted on the frame are normally biased into engagement with the panel at spaced locations around its periphery to hold the panel in a predetermined position laterally of the support frame. The support frame mounts an actuator member coupled to all of the clamps to position all clamps in a panel clamping position when the actuator member is in a first position and to position all clamps in a panel release position when the actuator is in a second position.Type: GrantFiled: July 13, 1995Date of Patent: December 16, 1997Assignee: Progressive Tool & Industries CompanyInventors: Michael R. Patent number: 5665255Abstract: Metal alloy workpieces are laser welded to one another with a laser head emitting a laser beam. The laser head and workpieces are moved relative to one another at a predetermined velocity along a weld path. The laser beam power is selectively modulated to have an output with a desired frequency andr amplitude. An oscillating motion of the laser beam is superimposed on top of the relative velocity of movement between the laser head and the workpieces along the weld path, such that a rate of cooling of molten metal is controlled to a predetermined rate. A stroke rate of the oscillating motion is synchronized with the frequency of the modulated power output so that as the laser head moves along the weld path at a constant velocity, the laser beam is oscillated to thereby cause the laser beam to at least slow down relative to the velocity of travel between the laser head with respect to the workpieces along the weld path during backward oscillatory movement of the laser beam.Type: GrantFiled: August 1, 1995Date of Patent: September 9, 1997Assignee: Progressive Tool & Industries CompanyInventor: Peter L. Patent number: 5409158Abstract: A framing system and framing device for assembling and welding a body-in-white utilizes completely separate framing and welding operations, which are typically intermixed in conventional framing systems. The framing device is a unitary frame structure within which an underbody, side frames and other body components can each be supported and accurately positioned with respect to each other prior to the welding operation. The framing device includes a cart which serves as the base and main support for the framing device, and an upper body support member. Using an appropriate number of clamping devices, the net positions of the body components which constitute the body-in-white are properly established and maintained, such that gate fixtures are unnecessary during the welding operation. The structure of the framing device provides considerable access to the body-in-white supported within the interior of the framing device, such that a greater number of welding guns can be used during the welding operation.Type: GrantFiled: July 8, 1993Date of Patent: April 25, 1995Assignee: Progressive Tool & Industries CompanyInventor: Jeffrey R. Patent number: 4781285Abstract: A drive for an article transfer device in which a carrier is driven into contact with a stationary part to lift the part upwardly from a stationary support employs a drive motor which provides a constant speed input during a lifting cycle. The constant speed input is transmitted to the carrier by a motion transmission mechanism which drives the carrier in an elevating stroke in which the velocity of the carrier is momentarily reduced to zero at the instant the carrier contacts the part to avoid an undesirable impact between the carrier and part. The mechanism may be set up to accommodate contacting the part at a predetermined point other than the midpoint of the carrier stroke and includes a mechanism which operates at a maximum mechanical advantage at the time of part contact.Type: GrantFiled: September 21, 1987Date of Patent: November 1, 1988Assignee: Progressive Tool & Industries CompanyInventors: Howard Schlatter, Lawrence A.
